“Great value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2008

Stayed at the Wheelhouse Inn in Sept and was very impressed with the quality of the property and fixtures and fittings. We stayed in The Crows Nest which had fantastic views and the property had everything needed to stay in self catered if you didn't want to venture out to one of the nearby restaurants. The tea and coffee provisions were a nice touch as wasn't expecting anything at all. Excellent value for money.

What a fantastic place !!.

We had a 2 night stay in Nelson and chose this property after searching the net and reading the Tripadvisor reviews.

The owners were fantastic to deal with. All communication was quick and friendly.

We were accomodated as a group of 5 in the Crows Nest which is the uppermost and newest of the buildings that make up Wheelhouse Inn. The access up the very steep drive is interesting but the pay off is in the superb view over Tasman Bay to the west. The Crows Nest is orientated to make the most of the view from every room and a great balcony which would be a real asset in times of better weather than we experienced during our visit.

The unit was spacious, modern, well furnished and very clean. It was well appointed to self cater should you choose. Dining options in nearby Nelson are fairly comprehensive. (Just don't drink too much before you tackle the driveway in the rain at night !)
We thought it was excellent value for money when compared to previous experiences with accomodation of a lesser quality.

The kids adjudged the bathroom and shower excellent which is their quaint benchmark for rating.

We have had the good fortune to experience fairly extensive travel as a family group and unanimously voted the Crows Nest as the best place we stayed at on our NZ holiday and some of the best accomodation we have experienced anywhere.

To sum up the Wheelhouse Inn - Excellent in every way. Nelson and surrounds has much to offer a family holiday.

  • Liked — Quality of accomodation and fantastic views
  • Disliked — Access. A little difficult to find and access

The Wheelhouse Inn is comprised of 5 individual units on the property; we stayed in the Chart House Main Deck. The views of Tasman Bay from our unit were spectacular. You can enjoy the views of the bay, sailboats and mountains beyond from the deck or inside through the bay windows. The rooms are comfortable, spacious and nicely decorated. The kitchen allowed us to cook in when we felt like it, but if we wanted to eat out, the restaurants were minutes away by car. The free high speed internet access came in handy, but the best part about our stay is that it was affordable and great value.

My husband and I stayed in the Chart House Main Deck on 9 September 2007 during our second trip to the South island of NZ. Do yourself a favour and check out their website: [--] We absolutely loved this place and wished we had've stayed here for 2-3 nights instead of only one. At least it gives us an excuse to go back there and stay again. We walked into the apartment and just said 'wow'. There were fresh flowers on the table and bench so the beautiful smell of fresh freesias was all through the house. It was beautifully decorated and had amazing views out over the water and snow-capped mountains. Sitting out on the deck, sipping a drink, watching the sunset just topped it all off nicely......wish I was there right now...........:( Also if you want a nice place to eat in Nelson with great atmosphere and yummy food, go to Lambretta's. It's open for breakfast, lunch & dinner and has a bar.

We stayed in the Captains Quarters in April 06 for 3 days and nights as part of our NZ tour.

The only downside is the climb up the driveway to the property but it is well worth it when you see the view over the bay from the wooden deck and from the "1st class" bedroom upstairs.

Very friendly owner, clean and aesthetically pleasing property.

It is a self catering property but value for money wise it was brilliant !

Out of the 13 properties we stayed in over 4 weeks, the C.Q. is in our top 3.

Hope to return some day and BUY the place !!!!!

My husband and I had an all-too-brief stay in Nelson Nov 06. We loved the Wheelhouse Inn. House was beautifully maintained and kept and the owners could not have been more pleasant. Perfect for a couple or small family, lovely views of the water and in a great location. We didn't want to leave!

We lover our stay here. It has amazing views, is really comfortable and is a great value. The owners are very helpful. I would especially recommend it if you have a car as it is a bit of a walk or a cab ride into town, but the views make it better than anything in town and it is very spacious.
