“Great place in Nelson”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

We found the hotel centrally located with good rooms although the wifi is weak. The service was good and close to really good breakfast lunch and dinner restaurants. Nelson as a town was fantastic. We enjoyed creative food, wine and also went to a community theater performance of Calendar Girls that was excellent. The car museum is also excellent.

I expected much more from this four star hotel, which is generally highly rated. Very lacking in any atmosphere, the place had a deserted and characterless feel. The gym is poorly maintained to the point of dangerous, i had to fix up a couple of machines before using them. The pool is so tiny it is useless. Most irritating is the almost total lack of wifi - only in the lobby, where they give you a very limited usage - and none in the rooms, not even if you pay. Lack of free wifi is one of my main turn-off points for hotels, but lack of any wifi is inexcusable. On the upside, the room was nice enough and comfortable, and the breakfast good if pricey. Its ok, but poor value and not great in comparison with the many other places I stayed in during my trip around NZ. Needs updating really.

We had requested a King Bed room facing the cathedral. On arrival we were allocated room 915 on the 9 th floor which was near to the noisy aircon generators and could be heard in the room. The view was also partially blocked by the roof below. I immediately requested a change of room and the receptionist agreed with my comments but said it was because of my request for a king bed. If a queen bed and a single was ok then she had far more choice. She suggested room 514 on the fifth floor which was a really good room with dual aspect views of the sea front and the cathedral. Lovely picture windows. Very well furnished and we had no problems with the Queen bed. Very comfortable.
Bathroom a good size but not too happy with the shower in the bath, much prefer a walk in shower.
Safer and easier to use with more room. We found this shower a little too low. Otherwise bathroom good size and well equipped.
Overall room excellent.
Breakfast had three options. We chose the Express Continental at 11 dollars per person and found very good value.
Hotel well located to Trafalgar Square and cathedral and good base for touring.
Booking an executive room I do feel the complimentary wifi for 30 minutes per day in the lobby, should be made to one hour and be useable from the room.
Also a five dollars parking charge overnight seems strange as everywhere else parking has been free. We in fact parked on the road outside he hotel which is free but has limited spaces.
If using this hotel for the Abel Tasman National Park then I think better to look for accommodation nearer to the Park

Room Tip: Choose 5th floor, overlooking the cathedral/ sea front. Room 514 excellent. Avoid 9th floor

Looks nothing flash from the outside but once in the door you find yourself in a new hotel but styled for an earlier more gracious living era.

Great location. Lovely outlook across to the Cathedral and just a 2-minute walk to Trafalgar Street and the heart of the shopping area.

Rooms very comfortable fitted out in the earlier gracious hotel style with modern bathroom/toilet. Good size room with king-sized bed plus a large single, writing desk with laptop ethernet cable connection for internet, bedside seating and the usual extras (flat-screen TV etc).
No WiFi in room but hotel internet connection plans can be purchased online.
No air-conditioning - just heater with a fan setting. Windows can be opened so we had no problem staying cool in the high 20s temperatures we had when there.
Shower over bath. Top quality bathroom toiletries.

All the amenities including separate cafe on ground floor (only open to 4pm), gym, sauna and a basic pool (shaded in afternoon - November 2013).

Reasonable priced at NZ$165 per night for double room (November 2013)

Courteous, efficient service.

Excellent conference venue. Good organisation - 3-day conference went smoothly without a hitch. Prompt check-in and check-out. Great conference area, good conference facilities, nice food including Conference Dinner in main dining room - set menu with great local wine selection and good service.
Highly recommended as a conference venue.

Stayed an extra day after conference and no change in high standard of food or service.

Highly recommend the hotel's Miyazu Japanese Restaurant. Had the Teppanyaki dinner which is worth the cost (NZ$57 per person) for the entertainment value alone. The chef is not only skilled but highly amusing and if you get with a group that are prepared to enjoy themselves, which we did, then you will be in for a real treat. There is more food provided than anyone can possibly eat, so go slow on the fried rice after the appetizers and entrees so you have room for the most amazing variety of seafood and meats you could possible ask for.
The Angus beef literally melts in your mouth
Tip: Ask for it medium rare regardless of how you like your steak cooked normally. You won't be disappointed.
A very enjoyable way to spend a fun evening with people you've never met before.

Great place to stay in all respects as well as a top conference venue.

There is definitely that big hotel feel to the Rutherford. This brings all the services that may wish for but the F&B outlets are looking dated and the bedrooms, although more than adequate, could be fresher and have a more modern feel. The housekeeping team have a habit of knocking on the door about 9am - and entering if you are not quick enough to answer - and I found this very annoying. Those housekeeping staff I met though were extremely friendly. Also other annoyances - for example the newspaper that was requested never arrived and the asian lady who checked me out did not come across as particularly friendly - just "room number?" and no pleasantries.
Food overall was very good and service staff generally excellent and friendly.
All in all, the experience was good but at the price I paid I expected much better.

Not a bad hotel but fairly average overall. Service was friendly enough as you would expect from a small town in New Zealand. Bathrooms had some defects and the shower was not up to 4* star quality, sitting too low on the wall for someone that is 6ft tall. Room service for two cocktails and chips took 40 mins and both were of questionable standard, next time I will be getting my fries from McDonalds just down the road...
We did have one very nice dinner in their Japanese Teppanyaki restaurant though - definitely a great experience and very tasty food with attentive service.
All in all a clean, ok standard hotel but would suggest there are better options for the money in Nelson. I will advise next time when I find them...

Located next to the Cathedral, the Rutherford is hard to miss - being a relative skyscraper at 9 storeys high!
We stayed on the top floor which was good and we got nice views of the city, across to the harbour and the road noise wasn't too bad.
Bed was large (king requested and received) and comfortable. Bathroom was a bit small but did the job - couldn't figure out how to shut the fan down though and that made a bit of noise.
Modest selection in the mini-bar with usual hotel prices. Good menu available for room service at good prices,
Bar on the 2nd floor is well stocked and a comfortable, pleasant place to relax.
Overall, nothing spectacular, but certainly a decent quality place to stay. We stayed on a Saturday night and it was quite noisy in the town in the early hours so staying higher up as we did is probably a good thing.
