“Fun, party hostel - great pool!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2012

I stayed here twice with my partner in private rooms. The rooms were great value for money, big comfortable beds and pretty quiet. The outdoor area with pool and spa is amazing and just what we needed after 5 days hiking. You could jump from the spa into the cold pool which was just awesome. The only thing is, you can drink around the pool and in the kitchen which is awesome but people didn't seem to have much respect and you would wake in the morning to find empties lying around - not a big deal but guests should clean up or the hostel could employ someone for this. We are 26 and 29 and had a fantastic time meeting great people and getting amongst the drinkers. The only thing I would say is that we felt in a couple of years we may feel a bit old to be in this fun party hostel. Otherwise, highly recommend and would stay again on my next trip to Nelson.

I stayed here at the recommendation of a traveler I met elsewhere. I think I would've enjoyed this hostel a bit more if I wanted to really party. Perhaps I was there at a bad time but it seemed like quite the spring break crowd -- drunk, rowdy, and loud. There was a bus parked just outside the property so maybe it was just a certain group. This place definitely has potential -- it's an older building so it has character, and it has a swimming pool and spa pool. The drawback is that there are so many people there, facilities get dirty quickly and it is hard for staff to keep up with cleaning. The bathrooms weren't very tidy, with toilet paper and tp rolls all over the floor. Additionally, the number of people staying there really showed when dinnertime rolled around and everyone wanted to cook at the same time. It is a big kitchen, but likely not proportionate to the number of guests. I stayed in a 4-bed dorm and we could only find one power outlet in the room, making it difficult for us all to charge things.

They do provide a free cereal and toast brekkie though. It's also important to note the "free wifi" advertised is limited to 90 minutes no matter how many nights you stay. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to town, but an easy and pleasant one.

Keep your key with you when hanging around the pool area at night because the night porter will come around and need to see it, apparently to be sure you are actually a guest there.

Overall, there are probably nicer places to stay in Nelson, but it's not terrible here.

Paradiso backpackers in nelson was simply THE BEST hostel I have found in NZ. I have been travelling around for 6 months. Not only was the place clean and tidy with friendly and helpful staff, it was also full of other very happy guests, which ment the atmosphere was amazing! It was raining when I was there but this made chillin in the spa pool and sauna even better. Ive been in some hostels where the staff seem like they dont want to be there, this place simply rocks and so do all the staff. Would reccommend to anybody and everybody.

Value: Because the hostel section was full, we stayed two nights in the hotel portion. This was not a good value for the money. Starting with check-in, there was no-one in the hotel portion of the office. While there was a room key waiting for us, the combination lock on the gate to the hostel portion would not open and the combination lock to the door of the hostel was also locked. We were knocking on the door for a while before we could get into the reception and kitchen area in the hostel.
Food/Kitchen: We were disappointed by the "breakfast". It was the most basic hostel fare, a stretch to advertise it as "continental breakfast"- available was: 3 kinds of cereal, bag of bread, milk, tea, coffee. Nothing fresh (no baked goods). No fruit. Help yourself and wash your own dishes as typical for hostel but not for hotel price. Kitchen was very heavily used but clean and airy with big windows.
Front desk was helpful in booking tour.
Hot tub very heavily used. The water was cloudy- not sure if it was just cloudy or not cleaned often enough for the use it gets.
The internet had to be re-set before it would work.
The pool area was party central, even in the hotel section we could hear the partying. It was not out of hand and it was not too loud to sleep. Very lively.
The multi-night cleaning is hostel standard, not hotel standard-- the room is not made up if you stay multiple nights, you can expect a towel and your trash can emptied. The room was clean when we arrived.
The beds were very low. Reasonably comfortable but unusually low- only about 24 inches off the ground.
Location- about 15-20 minute walk from town. Nice residential neighborhood.
Overall, would have been great at hostel prices, but below standard for hotel prices.

We stayed here for 3 nights in a private double. The room was quite small and had funny angles but we didn't spend much time in the room. Our room faced onto the back of the hostel, outside the kitchen. This was really noisy as people use this area to smoke and drink.

On check-in you get a free 90-minute internet voucher for wireless but on their advertising they don't mention the time limit.

The kitchen is quite good but could have been cleaner. They clean the kitchen from 10.30 to 11.30 each day and they don't like you using the kitchen during this time. The free nightly vegetable soup was nice but popular! The staff were helpful but we got a rude waking up when the cleaner knocked once at 9.30 am then came straight in! They started hoovering at that time too so don't expect to be able to sleep late, even if you've been kept up late by the noise the night before.

They have a pool and a spa pool but we didn't use it. The town centre is about a 15 minute walk away.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the kitchen

I stayed at Paradiso a couple of times during a trip round New Zealand. I had the choice of the motel accommodation or the hostel and I opted for the latter. The message I got from the many young people from all over the world was that it felt like home. They were busy in the communal kitchen baking bread and 'from scratch' meals. The managers, Rob and Helen are a delight and did everything they could to ensure a memorable stay for everyone.
Unfortunately Nelson itself is plagued by ants and they did make an appearance while I was there, but the situation was promptly addressed. Believe me, they were everywhere - I went to an organic supermarket and they were in the chocolate brownies!
I understand that Nelson City Council is doing its best to eradicate the problem.
So - back to Paradiso - swimming pool, hot tub, book exchange, internet access and friendly folk - what more could anyone want.
Go there!!!!

the paradiso is certainly a backpackers for young travellers who are looking to meet new people and have a good time. the night we came there they had a theme party and people got dressed up and did some crazy stuff...they have a buss at the back of the yard where at night you can sit and have drinks. i guess that's a good idea since it doesn't make noise for the ones who want to sleep.
big nice pool in the yard, beach ball, jacuzy and cool tv room.
they also gave as free nodels when we checked in which was nice and had soup in the evening. and in the morning...free breakfast! (bread, jam, corn flakes, milk..the basics)
rooms were a bit old fashioned and there were beds up really high that you had to climb this ladder to get up to. kinda felt like they were looking for a creative place to add some more beds...luckily i got a normal bunk bed. and there are no showers on the 1st floor...
all together it's pretty refreshing for NZ coz most of the hostels there are so quiet and dull, but here they really try to make sure people have fun.
