“Good hotel but not in Nelson”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

The Grand Mercure Monaco was not what we were expecting. We didn't realise that it was so far from Nelson - this was our own fault though.

The hotel itself was good. It was in it's own little English village. The room was clean however there were some 'hairs' in the bathroom sink. Our room was on the ground level with a little courtyard. When we checked in there was a man standing outside our room trimming the hedges. We thought he would see us and leave however he continued to trim and then vacuum for about an hour.

There is a great pub across the road called the Honest Lawyer - I would recommend a beer there.

I probably wouldn’t stay here again only because it wasn’t in the location we were after.

The staff were very friendly though. They gave us lots of advice and directions.

Thank for very much for sharing your comments about your stay with us at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco. Thank you for your comments regarding our location. Although we are not located directly in the city centre we are ideally situated for guests wanting to view our wonderful region with the WOW Museum just around the corner and only minutes to beautiful wineries and vineyards. We are close to the Richmond Mall and en route to the amazing Abel Tasman National Park main highway. We also offer a complimentary hotel shuttle between the hours of 08.30am – 4.00pm weekdays and 08.30am – 1.00pm weekends during the summer months which can be arranged prior to arrival for airport collection and drop-off. I would like to apologise for the hairs found in your basin, I have passed your comments onto our housekeeping manager for her to follow up on so as to ensure this doesn’t happen again. We appreciate you sharing your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future.
Sincerely
Clare Davies

This is our first trip to New Zealand and a friend recommended this hotel. She'd stayed in the apartments and when we made the reservation we thought that was the only choice. We were placed in a regular hotel room which is fine but not what we expected. The hotel is created like a mini village and is very quaint. The room is plain but comfortable. The bathroom is really nice and we loved that the soap, shampoo, etc. is offered in big containers with a pump so no extra packaging but still nice products. The bed is soft but quite comfortable. The restaurant on site (Orangerie) is nice with a good breakfast buffet.
This property is further out of town than we'd thought....our expectation was that we could walk into town but this place is way too far out for that.
Staff is quite friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: There are a few different room options which are all nice but just make sure you're ordering wha...

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco. We have four different room types so as to try and cater for a large variety of different accommodation requirements. Our Boutique Hotel rooms are our more basic room type and are perfect for a one night stay. We do also have One Bedroom Studios, one and two bedroom cottages and perhaps one of these may have been better suited to your needs with separate living areas and kitchen facilities. We hope to be able to welcome you back one day in the near future so that you can experience one of our lovely spacious studios or cottages. Thank you again for your comments and we hope to be able to welcome you back one day in the near future.
Sincerely
Clare Davies

This hotel was a charming, almost cottage like place to stay. The bathrooms are modern and updated and the staff were extremely helpful. It's very easy to get to Abel Tasman National park from the hotel.

Reception at arrival was as courteous as ever. This time had one of the more luxuries rooms located in the "village" and not in the hotel. The room was really nice and comfortable. THe Flat Screen TV's are very small though. The bed quality was excellent. Bar fridge in the room (with full kitchen) - pity though that this is not stocked. Fortunately I had a bottle of wine I had bought earlier to enjoy while relaxing.

The food in the restaurant was good again, the service was attentive (the only comment was that the waitress had to read the specials from a note pad rather than reciting from memory) - breakfast was also good.

Will come back and would also recommend this hotel to others

I travel to Nelson on a regular basis and I will always stay at the Grand Mecure.
The Staff are all delightful ,nothing is a problem.
The Hotel is situated in a very special part of Nelson with stunning gardens . The gardens are a credit to them becouse I know they work really hard to keep them looking amazing all year round.
The beds are really comfortable.
I would not hesitate to recommend this Hotel to anyone.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your really lovely comments on Tripadvisor. I am thrilled to hear how much you enjoy staying with us and that you will continue to come back. We must be doing something right! We definitely are very lucky to be situated where are with the beautiful views across the Waimea inlet and of course as you mentioned, our wonderful gardens, I will be sure to pass on your lovely comments to our gardener who does a fantastic job of looking after the grounds. Thank you for your comments about the hotel staff, I will pass this on as I am sure this will serve as an encouragement to all as we continuously strive to improve our customer service. Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you again on your next visit to Nelson.

This hotel reminded me of being in a small village in France. The original owner needs to be congratulated on mirroring a little bit of Europe in sunny Nelson! In fact its very french, quaint and cosy. My only disappointment was the bathroom which had slow drainage in shower, causing excessive water on the bathroom floor, very annoying. Staff were incredibly helpful. Dining facilities excellent and food quite scrumptious. Staff in dining room needed to meet and greet in French as they do in other parts of NZ eg. Viaduct in Auckland.

Cannot fault it from the moment we arrived early. We were supposed to be picked up from the airport and when I rang to say that they hadn't arrived the instantly said get a taxi and they would pay for it. Great service without any grumblings

I am sorry about the confusion with the shuttle service, we do offer a complimentary airport shuttle but I am happy to hear that the receptionist was able to help you on this occasion with a taxi. We hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back on your next visit to Nelson.
