“Best Backpacker in Nelson”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2012

This is a fantastic backpacker. It is clean, comfortable and well laid out. It has everything you need. From our experience finding a clean backpacker is a bonus, finding one that it well set up is a treasure. The service was absolutely perfect, with all the staff being friendly, calm, knowledgeable and very efficient. All their interactions with us were professional and respectful, something the hospitality market in New Zealand could do with more of. The outside areas are lovely and provide plenty of opportunity to sit around and relax. The advice given out was useful and relevant and there are plenty of resources available if you want to do some planning of your own. The place was full for the two nights we stayed, obviously word of how great it is has got around, so you need to book early.

I stayed here in November 2011 for three nights while attending a cycling conference. The hotel is run by two couples that are themselves backpackers with children. Every night at dinner time one of them appears wth a huge tray of hot chocolate pudding and ice cream. The kitchen has everything required including complementaries. There is a lovely large lounge with wireless. The hotel is in a quiet location near the river and pathway into the CBD, but only 500 metres from the state highway.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side upstairs are excellent.

Pros to this hostel:

(1) Decorated nicely, cozy, good Kiwi music played all day.
(2) Excellent check in service by a nice guy who seemed to always be there
(3) Very clean double private room
(4) Environmentally conscious
(5) Free chocolate pudding (but you better be right there when they give it out or it goes quickly)!
(6) Excellent location - very short walk into town.

Cons
(1) Internet not free
(2) Loud outside room at night (location right by the toilets didn't help)
(3) Extremely busy kitchen around dinner time.

Ovearll I would recommned this hostel. I had a nice, relaxing time here and decided to extend my stay an extra night. The coziness of the common areas defintiely made it for me.

The hostel is excellent.

We stayed in a double room in December. The room had character to it and was very reasonably priced (approx. 65 NZD / night). There was a very helpful local guide provided in the room telling you all about the hostel services and facilities as well as the town and the surrounding area. It also included a quick introduction from the owners which we thought was a very nice touch.

The hostel is run very well - you can hire a tent, use an iron or a hairdryer for free...The communal area is great, so is the kitchen.

All in all a great place to stay, very close to the Nelson city center. We definitely recommend it.

Lovely hostel - bigger than many I've stayed in in NZ, so there was a slight impersonal quality to it. Having said that, staff were incredibly helpful and provided every facility you could ask for. Really comfortable, great facilities - and the best part, the chocolate cake at 8pm! Also got free breakfast at this time of year, so I saved a bit of money too! Very friendly, very nice location too - walking distance of town, but far enough to be quiet and peaceful. Even organised my Intercity bus to pick me up at the hostel!
