We wanted to stay a night in a cheap hotel before connecting with an international flight in the moring, we arrived about 8 pm (after a prompt but nerve racking shuttle ride)
We were greeted by a cheap and tacking interiror, with a long and high recpetion (I could hardly see over it)
After they gave us our key, we set of out a voyage down the hall way.
I swear the trip took us at least 10 minutes, zig zagging through an ever changing maze of rooms.
The old portaits of formar priministers and other important people gave us the feeling they were delibratley trying to turn their hotel into a haunted house!!!
As we kept on, the interiror chnaged from classic hotel, with dark red and wood tables, to retro with lime green and glass tables.
Finally we got to our room (room 159 out of 160 rooms)
We were appaled by the room, we were by the carpark, there were blaring street lams on outisde, the coffee was old and almost off, the bathroom (where do i start?) you could not turn the shower down once it was up with out it making an ear blasting noise!
Anyway, wanting a sleep we settled down (and not getting a sleep) we were awoken by a wake up call at 3 am when we had ordered the wake up call at 5.30 am.
That sums up our stay there.
HORRIBLE

We arrived in NZ and decided to stay the day in a hotel just to refresh ourselves and our 3 mth old twins. We called the Gateway for a shuttle and they said it would be there in 3 min - in reality it took more like 30 min for it to arrive. Once we got there it looked deserted but we checked in and the lady at the desk was polite but put us in a room all the way in the back of the hotel by the emergency exit - I don't understand why but oh well. We asked for a crib and they delivered one that looked to be atleast 10 yrs old and rickety - didn't use it oh and the staff didn't bring it in they left it at our door to haul in. Anyway, it was winter time in that part of the world so their solution to the cold was a PLUG IN HEATER the kind that you can easily touch the hot wires with your fingers - thank goodness our twins aren't old enough to mess with stuff like that. Oh and we had to pay for a full nights stay eventhough we were only staying from about 8am until 4:40pm since our flight left out later that night. Oh and the shuttle driver back to the airport that afternoon spent almost 10 min texting his friend back before starting the vehicle or even helping us load our luggage. The only redeeming quality was the room service was fairly prompt and the food wasn't that bad.

“Bussed somewhere else in the middle of the night!”

Airport Gateway Hotel

Mar 16, 2008

We had a pleasant stay there before we left New Zealand. The hotel decor is a bit tired, but it was cheap, and fine, apart from the reception staff who were totally unfriendly.

But then on the way back, we were due to arrive back at the hotel about 2am. We rang about 5pm to confirm our booking and tell them that we wouldn't be arriving until at least 2am. They said this was fine. We arrived about 2:30am, and were told we would be taken to their "sister concern". They were totally unapologetic, offered no explanation, and were really unfriendly. So we were taken in their shuttle to another hotel. When we got there we found out that the hotel wasn't a "sister concern" at all, it was a totally different hotel. The new hotel said that the Airport Gateway must have overbooked. They also said they can't charge the Airport Gateway for our stay, so we are being charged for the new hotel, which is likely to be more than we budgeted for at the Airport Gateway.

The people at the Airport Gateway shouldn't be in the hospitality industry, they have no idea how to deal with customers. If they had apologised, admitted their mistake, explained what was happening, and paid the extra cost we wouldn't have minded, but they didn't do any of these things, and feel really ripped off!

I am a travel agent and booked to stay here for one night before catching an early morning flight.

I was a bit nervous after reading the previous reviews but it was one of the only airport hotels which had availability as I booked only a day before I needed it.

Upon arrival we were met at reception at advised to drive around the back and unload our luggage directly into the room before finding a car park and having to drag it a long distance.

The car park was full but we managed to get the last park in their gated security car park.

The room was of a good size with 1x Queen bed and 1x single bed. The linen was clean and the room also looked very clean. Bathroom was slightly dated with an older style toilet, shower and basin but considering we were going to be there for less than 10 hours it didnt concern us the slightest. The room was very quiet and we had a good nights sleep and the wake up call we requested went off at the correct time.

The next morning we were taken to the airport by the motels shuttle bus and upon landing back in Auckland, we phoned for collection and were picked up within 10 minutes.

If you are just wanting somewhere cheap to stay, close to the airport and are not expecting anything fancy, this is the place for you. If you are expecting a 5 star hotel then don't stay.

Even though we only stayed one night based on the Best Western reputation when we got home we found that we had been charged 3 times for one room (thats right one room/one night). That was over a month ago and I am still trying to get the money back. I have tried contacting the hotel and Best Western (NZ), who come back with "we are looking into the matter" or its being investigated". Not good enough I signed for one nights accommodation (& paid for that nights accommodation) but the the 2 charges should never have happened. My advice check your credit card statements as soon as you possible can after arriving home.
