Owner description: Nearby Ljubljana and only few kilometres from the town Kamnik is located the bottom station of the cable car to Velika planina, which takes you amongst the green pastures of the mountain plateau in the heart of the Kamnik Alps. We recommend that you walk to the herdsmen's settlement and feel the simple way of the herdsmen's life, taste their dairy products and admire the unique architecture of the cottages which define Velika planina. To those, who are more active, the mountain offers ideal possibilities for hiking and various mountain-cycling tours.

“Friendly staff, worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013 via mobile

Visited end of September, on a very foggy day.
Cable car, then chair lift to the first station. We then got off and tried to find the shepherds domiciles, but due to the fog, we couldn't see anything. We managed to navigate to the top of the mountain, but no views.
We went back to the cafe near the chairlift station, we're greeted heartily by the staff, had some fantastic barley soup with sausage, and coffee. Everyone was in good spirits, and we had a great time. The cable car operator recognised us and even offered us a lift back down in his car.
Despite the fact that the day was technically unsuccessful, we had a fantastic time. The cable car and chairlifts were great fun, especially when you are laughing at your husband, who is scared of heights!
If we come back here, we would return.

“Connecting with nature and a unique way of life”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

A short drive north through Kamnik, a ride in a cable car and a hike of 2km or so will transport you into another world. Really! A world of mountain pastures, shepherds’ huts, an encounter with a shepherd or two in traditional shepherd dress, and even a bowl of hearty, steaming soul food. There's a museum to explore, and a chapel, and plenty of mountain air to inhale. All this and the company of a guide from Slovenia Guides whose personalised care, attention and knowledge is unsurpassed. Conversation, questions, answers - it’s like being out with a friend. This is more than sightseeing. It’s immersion. There are so many treasures, like this one, waiting to be discovered within close proximity of Ljubljana.

“magical mountain experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

We visited the area as a day trip from Ljubljana with a view to photography and we were delighted with our experience. Took the cable car, then the chair list, and wandered for hours amid the herdsmen huts. When they had been referred to as "shepherd's huts" we went expecting sheep, but cows are king here and raw milk and cheese are the draw for tourists. We sample the cheese, which was delicious, and enjoyed seeing cows wandering blissfully through the meadows. On the way down, just before a cloudburst came, we stopped at a small restaurant near the lift station and had the most wonderful thick stew with sausage. Hearty doesn't describe it. It was a lovely day and Bunkie and I have great photos and fond memories.

“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013 via mobile

We went to Velika Planina in August 2013. We parked in the carpark for free next to the cable cars, it cost 16 euros return for the cable cars and chair lifts up to the village at the top of the mountain. Once in the cable car the view is truly stunning, you can see for miles over the mountains, it's really spectacular. Once at the top it's unbelievable that there's any further to go but a long chair lift journey takes you to the very top of the mountain where you can walk down, enjoying the views and explore the village and the unique little huts.

There's somewhere to eat at the top of the mountain and somewhere between the chair lifts and the cable cars, we didn't eat there so can't recommend.
