“Great for a hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

I am REALLY not one for hostels. I would never have given this place a second look if it wasn't for the need to stay somewhere in the area for an early departure to Fraser Island the following morning. That being said, this place exceeded my expectations. The room didn't really have much to do but at a bare minimum, it was clean which is incredibly important to me. Most notable, however, was the service of the employees. We arrived by bus and YHA employees gladly picked us up at the bus station and transported us to the hostel for free. The following morning, they transported us to the ferry for Fraser Island. Even more surprising, after we had spent a night on Fraser and returned back to Hervey Bay, we had a few hours to kill before our bus picked us up. At this point, we weren't even hostel guests but the folks at YHA let us hang out in their common area. We had a place to order some pizza to and used their bathrooms to clean up. Everyone was so pleasant and accomodating. While I don't know if I would recommend this hostel for an extended stay (based solely on the fact that it's a hostel and I need a little bit more pampering), if you need a quick, cheap place to stay on your way to Fraser, this was not a bad option at all!

A rare hostel that allows camping, we stayed here with a small campervan. $20 for both of us gave us the run of the place. The facilities were clean and in good condition, the restaurant/bar was cosy and had good basic food for cheap, and the grounds were park-like and tranquil. The owners and staff were friendly and helpful. Close to the marina and quiet.

this is a very nice hostel where you can feel at home as you walk into the reception desk, where the staff is very kind and helpful. Good choice in the restaurant in a very warm sitting room with internet station, pool tables and big maps! I really enjoyed, thank you!!!

Have stayed in many hostel's throughout New Zealand and Australia. Stayed in both double room and double ensuite. Double was very small, door didn't close properly and walls were very thin and hence very noisy. Busy but clean kitchen and shared bathrooms. Double ensuite however had separate kitchen of 'cabin' guests, much cleaner and more spacious than the other. Plenty of parking. Easy for those going to Fraser Island.

We stayed in a private double our friends upgraded to a ensuite double (unnecessary I think because we had showers and toilets around the corner- which were spotless and not busy).

Staff were great very friendly and helpful. They run a bus that picks you up and drops you off to where you want to go.

Hostel is a bit out of the way of things which is a bit of a downer on everything.

However on the plus side.
Kitchens (plural) were spotless and fully stocked with utensils and crockery.
Restaurant was basic but nice.
Bar was fun with jenga, wii, pool table etc.
Tennis court on site.
Swimming poo (which prob could do with a clean)

Rooms were comfortable not overly huge but then again it is a hostel.

Overall a really good experience.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2012

We stayed in a private double with a shared bath and were surprised by a few things at this hostel. Our room was quite small and opens to the outdoors. The bed was the bottom half of a bunk with the frame still attached, and the walls were simple brick. The curtains looked to be from 1960. The room looked as though it hadn't been cleaned in a while as there were cobwebs in many of the corners, and a big fat cockroach fell out when we closed the curtains. The bed and sheets were clean however.

Pros - Good lounge and pool area with a restaurant/bar.
- Bathrooms were clean and well maintained.
- The hostel is in a big lot with lots of trees, it makes for a nice walk around and a pleasant atmosphere to be in.
- They offered a pick-up and drop-off service from the bus station.
- Quiet at night!
- Helpful staff at the front desk

Cons - Dated, dusty rooms.
- Kitchen needed to be cleaned and maintained better. (dirty floors, old food, single picnic table inside to eat on)
- There was no ventilation in the kitchen, so it was always twice as hot as outside.
- Expensive wifi
- Long walk to the nearest grocery store, or anything. It's in a residential area and walking to a mall, or "downtown" is impossible.

Hervey Bay was just a stop for Fraser Island for us, and we're glad that was it. If we came back we would look for somewhere else, but might stay here again.
