“Great location, fantastic view but in need of wheelchair accessible facilities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Stayed three nights at Akama. Very large room, great location and fantastic view over the ocean. However the room could be even better if they made it more wheelchair accessible. As for now you can't enter the shower with shower chair on wheels since there is a metal lid of 3-4 cm before the shower. There is also no room for your legs under the zink in the bathroom and no bars at the toilet chair. Entering the balcony is also difficult since there is high metal lid of 10 cm and a difference in floor levels. You'll need assistance.

Hi SwedeOnWheels
Thanks for the review. Great to read that you enjoyed your stay at Akama Resort.
Can we please take this opportunity to state that we are not an accredited property and we did make every effort to clarify this with you when you called for details on our apartments prior to booking? We do however, offer accommodation that can be suitable for people using a wheelchair based on their individual requirements and we always make every effort to answer all questions accurately – lift to all levels, large open plan lounge/dining rooms, wide doorways, spacious bathrooms and ensuites. The lip at the base of the entry to the shower measures 3.5cms. Due to the under sink storage the overhang on the bathroom basin is 12cms. There is a small step down to the balcony from the lounge. The pool has graduated steps leading in to the shallow end – no ramp entry.
We appreciate your feedback and now intend to list details on our web site to inform other guests that may be considering staying at Akama Resort.
To assist you during your stay you were allocated a fully tiled apartment, provided with suction handrails for the shower and a plastic shower chair.
We hope you are enjoying the remainder of your travels in Australia and offer our best wishes to you for the journey home.
Kind regards,
Chris, Henriette and Regina

We stayed here as part of our Queensland trip as it is a convenient location for visiting Fraser Island. This is probably why most people stop off at Hervey Bay but it really does have something to offer. The apartment we booked was going to be on a side of the building where works were being carried out so the manager kindly moved us to a larger upgraded apartment which was absolutely stunning. Every home comfort was included and we could honestly have stayed there permanently! Underground secure parking was an added bonus at no extra cost. The manager was extremely knowledgeable of the local area and directed us to areas where we could spot wildlife and take in some nice walks. Local eateries are nearby and, on arrival, we ate at the local boat club which has a day membership scheme allowing you to have some fresh and inexpensive food and also some fresh and inexpensive beer if you are so inclined! There is also the option to dance to the local band on a Sunday afternoon but, after our long journey north, we sat that one out!

Room Tip: Upstairs front facing rooms have distant views but I am sure all of the rooms will be excellent.

Thank you haemara, for the excellent review.
It was a pleasure to welcome you to Akama Resort – such great guests and so keen to see what this region had to offer. We were happy to give you the upgrade at no extra charge and it was nice to read that you appreciated the views from your balcony.
As you correctly stated, Hervey Bay is the gateway to Fraser Island and we take pride in offering our guests trips to see this unique World Heritage listed island. Hervey Bay is a lovely region with beautiful beaches, excellent shopping, award winning clubs and lots of restaurant options.
We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Australia and that you had a pleasant journey home.
Thank you again for the review.
Kindest regards,
Chris, Henriette and Regina

We booked 2 bedrooms pool view apartment to stay for 2 days with another couple to share. The room is very clean and modern. The size is good. It has full size Kitchen and private laundry room with balcony facing the pool. The resort location is a block away from wharf and close to the airport. However, it is a bit far from major shopping and restaurant area. (10~15 min driving). We are very happy to select this resort, although the air conditioning outdoor unit is at 2nd bedroom balcony, a bit noisy during the night. We end up to switch off the air conditioning when we going to sleep. Apart of this, everything is great.

The unit was well appointed. The kitchen was great plenty of pots and pans. Nice and airy. Could not get on the Internet wifi. The car parking was very tight especially with a large vehicle.
Very close to Marina but not in walking distance to grocery shops and morning papers.
Beds extremely comfortable.

Room Tip: Great if you want to be near marina and tours

- beautifully equipped, fantastic open window onto balcony, very close to harbour. Few eating places nearby but nearest supermarket needs a car. Enjoyed our stay here, with enthusiastic management helping us with local attractions.

Fantastic location - near restaurants and whale watch tours. Living areas were luxurious and 4 of us enjoyed the huge, comfortable 3 bedrooms. Large, spacious balcony overlooking the pool area. The only downside was that, being on the 2nd floor, and during school holidays, it could be noisy with kids constantly in the pool. Tours and even bicycles are booked for residents - nothing more to do. Enjoyed being able to use a complimentary coffee machine too. The excellent service started well before we arrived with helpful info via telephone and being well accommodated with the many changes we made. Wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend!

Room Tip: Perhaps higher up for views.

6 of us stayed for four nights in a penthouse. It was very hard to fault the apartment or the location. Three good bedrooms, and great living area, with a huge balcony. Magnificent views. Staff were helpful with bookings, and when we reported a barbecue malfunction, it was fixed promptly and cheerfully. Good swimming pool, but of course the real attraction is Fraser Island.
