“Adorable Eyes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2014

To find the Ohau waterfall drive about 7 Km north on SH1 from Kaikoura. As soon as you start walking the track to the waterfall you are greeted by seal pups trying to swim their way up the stream. They pose for you on the rocks and in the pools. They play and play and you just take pictures and look at their cute eyes. Easy, well marked path to the waterfall at the end of the track. This is one of the best attractions in the area and it's free!!!!!

“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2014

An easy 10 minute bush walk on a well prepared and maintained track, although flat shoes would be advised as it's slightly uneven in places. At the end of the trail you come to a large natural pool at the bottom of a waterfall. The pool is full of baby seals of all ages playing in the water. There are groups of seals all the way up the stream that you follow and you wonder what all the fuss is about, but nothing could prepare you for the sight at the pool, it's absolutely amazing. There are guides there to answer questions. They live there while their parents are out at sea fishing.

“Never seen so many before!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2014

It's a short walk and at the start you ask yourself what all the fuss is about but as soon as you see the first pup you're away. If you look out carefully you can see them hiding under stones but mostly you just can see them playing in the stream easily. I went in autumn and there were heaps of pups around, even though it was raining it didin't matter, was a great experience. The place to stop when you want to see as many seals as in no other place I've visited.

“Back again for more”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

Well worth a second visit. The experience was as enjoyable, but quite different. On our first trip most of the seals were in the pool by the waterfall and hard to photograph is the low light. This time there were groups playing in the river pools on the way up to the falls, and we have some delightful videos of them frolicking in the water.

Still rate this as not to be missed if you enjoy wildlife. Access is relatively easy, but viewing success will be seasonal.
