“Simply brilliant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2011

Awesome hostel, one of the best I have stayed in. Central location, really lovely staff, great chill out area with balcony and sensational views. Absolutely spotless with a really lovely 'fish tank' theme. Any blokes should enquire about the 'man cave'.

Fish Tank is in a great location right in the middle of town and just across the road from the i-Site.

The staff are friendly, informative and just make the place feel so comfortable. The rooms are great and the beds are very comfortable (a nice change after some shocking beds the night before).

The only is that the kitchen/dining area is a bit small.

Otherwise everything is very clean and there is a lovely big lounge. The murals in the lounge, kitchen and upstairs bathrooms are fantastic. Great value for money.

Highly recommended!

If you go to Kaikoura (and you should) then this is definitely the place to stay. SO clean you can eat your dinner off the floor. Beds are REALLY comfy, nice big mattress. Good size kitchen with good facilities and bathrooms all clean and lovely, Great big balcony out the front with views across the ocean and mountains, also good big lounge with huge TV and sofas. The manager was very friendly and helpful, recommended the peninsula walk which we did and thoroughly enjoyed. Internet is available (and wifi) but at a small cost. We even passed through Kaikoura a few days later and as the intercity bus stops right outside, we saw the manager again and he remembered us and chatted a bit about where we had been.

Fish Tank Lodge is kept thoroughly clean. The location is in the center of town with a bus stop directly in front of the building. I was with a group of 4 women & we had the 4 female dorm for two nights. The large kitchen was very clean with all appliances in working order. The linen & blankets were very clean as were the rental towels. Nathan was an outstanding host & is very knowledgeable about the area. He is willing to answer all questions & has a wonderful sense of humor. Nathan was installing a giant (55") flat screen TV in the great room as we were leaving. It was a wonderful home-like stay. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone travelling on a budget or not!

Really great hostel in Kaikoura, in the heart of the town and managed really well. The facilities (showers and kitchen) are really clean, as is the bedding, and the artwork all around is cool - it's not a huge hostel either so you can actually get a nights sleep!

If they offer you this on the Kiwi bus, take it over the Lazy Shag as it's much better. Dorm rooms are 4 - 6 and really spacious and light. Prices are great.

Nathan is a very friendly, smiling, obliging host nothing is a problem to him.
The rooms were lovely and clean with fresh clean sheets and pillows, there were 13 of us and 4 of us slept in the mans cave, one wall covered in pictures of ladies but very respectable and the room was lovely even the women thought it was great.
The location of the lodge couldn't be better in the centre of town, the information centre and car park opposite and if you weren't too tired you could look around the shops.
The kitchen was very well equipped and always very clean, our first night the lodge was full but there was no problem with showers toilets and cooking. We also enjoyed the lounge where we set out our pot luck tea and wine and enjoyed our evenings chatting and enjoying ourselves. We were even entertained by some of the other guests with irish music and getting to know them. We as a group would recommend this accommodation to anyone.
Great value for money.
