“sweet quiet hostel in very touristy town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

Stayed in a cute ensuite double with my husband in March 2013. The faciliity is small, clean and quietly away from the main street yet a very short walk down a hill. However, Kaikoura itself can be skipped. It is a very touristy town whose entire raison etre seems to be very expensive whale watching tours. We skipped that and drove to the tip of the area where you can take a wonderful walk and have some good fish for lunch and tour a small but charming museum.

We stayed here for one night in a private double room. The room was nice enough and it's only a short 5 minute walk down to the ocean. The lodge also has a hot tub which is a nice feature and the views on a sunny morning are fantastic.

The only thing that let it down for us was that the majority off the lodge had been taken over by a volunteer group and they were very unsociable to 'outsiders'. As the lodge isn't very large we didn't have any opportunity to really meet anyone that evening and felt like we couldn't use the communal areas.

Its very easy going and relaxed here. The rooms are nice, only problem was the bathroom windows were always open giving you a very cold shower experience at the wrong time of year! Just a short hill (which if your in NZ your used to) to the beach.

I loved this place in Kaikoura even though I was there only a night. Located on a hill, its quiet and further away from the main road so you won't hear the noise from traffic. The bed I had in the private room was very comfortable and had a lovely view.

WiFi junkies, there's no WiFi here. Just computers where you have to pay for minutes to go online. The hosts are great to talk to also. Great place to enjoy the serenity and beauty of Kaikoura.

When walking to the hostel, don't make the same mistake I did by following the main road to Deal Street. That is a 20 minute walk. There's a path near the I-site visitors center that leads up the hill to the hostel, which takes about five minutes to get there

Just a couple of minutes walk from the centre, the Dolphin Lodge Backpackers is a great choice. Besides the location, the hot tub, sun lounges and deck were plus points in my book. It's a small lodge, so it was quiet and peaceful even though the lodge was full. I stayed a few hours after checking out and sat on a sun lounge in the garden with a book and a beer :)

It feels like you are staying in somebody's house, the people are really friendly. There are only about 6 or 7 rooms, including 3 double (2 ensuite). You get access to the hot tub outside, the garden, and the kitchen/dining room. Only one bathroom (with 2 showers) for everybody to share, so it can be a little awkward.
The location is great, at the end of a quiet street with sea view, and only a short walk down the hill to the main street with shops and restaurant. Very good price for what you get.

Room Tip: It's worth getting the room with private bathroom.

Fantastic chilled atmosphere , great quiet location, but right near the town too, super views of the bay from the deck, and a spa pool to relax in and watch the stars. Perfect.
There's separate tv room from the kitchen dining area, or take meals onto the deck, laundry room, sun loungers in the garden (wich is lovley)
Info centre is at the bottom of the short hill.
Book in advance as it gets full quickly , hardly suprising !
It could just do with a couple of lamps in the dorm room, that's all.
