“GlowWorms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

We spent a night here at the Mountain Jade backpackers, we hadn't booked anything and turned up and managed to get a great little mini studio with its own kitchen bathroom facilities and room for 5 people, we were in a group of 4 and was just fantastic. Everything was clean and the man behind the front desk was incredible helpful and rather knowledgeable about the area, he recommended we took a late night trip to the glow worm dell where we were blown away by the sight of these fantastic creatures, (free) The area is a pretty quiet town and more of a through town or an overnight stop. Everything is very close by, supermarket, video store, pharmacy and even a sock factory if that takes your fancy. It was relatively cheap for NZ and had a great selection of Board games and dvds for a quiet night in. Our night consisted of 6 hours of Monopoly. Great Clean hostel and right by the jade factory.

Room Tip: If your in a larger group, try and get one of the contained group rooms.

Mountain Jade Backpackers was clean and well-kept; the t.v lounge was nice and had up-to-date computers with skyping equipment; the owner was friendly and helpful; and it was right in the center of town. But the kitchen/dining area was small and over-crowded; the dorm mattresses were thin, which made them uncomfortable; and it could get noisy at night.

We have made these dorm rooms a lot more spacious by taking out some beds to make it more comfortable for all.

I stayed at the Mountain Jade in a single room, which was more a twin, but cheap as chips.
The room and facilities were very clean and tidy, heaps of Dvds to watch, comfy couches and a well equiped kitchen. The owner is also very helpful and friendly. Heaps of parking out the back.
The only downside was that the kitchen was abit small.
Highly recommended for every sort of traveller. :-)

Hi Miriam
Thank you for your review we love to hear how your stay with us was.
We have changed around the kitchen a little to make some more room and have put the a smaller table in their and we have put the large table into the lounge to free up some space in the kitchen.

I stayed in a really nice hostel, called the Mountain Jade Backpackers in Hokitika and I would highly recommend it. It was clean, very well located in the centre of town, with a very helpful owner John, who spent the time to point out all the different things to do there and where these attractions were located in the town. I had a self-contained unit with my own t.v. four bunk beds, one a double with linen, already made up for me, all the cooking utensils I needed and my own spacious bathroom. It was lovely. They have a big, open living room and overall, the backpackers had a great feel to the place. I really enjoyed my stay there. It has a pretty low rating on BBH but I don't know why, because for me, I would rate it 98%.

Room Tip: Self contained units are well worth the money

I stayed here for just one night as we drove up the west coast....as I figured most people do. Our private room was cute and clean. The bathroom was fine as well and it was kind of neat that you could look into the jade factory shop from above in the backpackers. However, the hostel had a funky smell when you first entered and the kitchen was gross....and I am pretty laid back about that sort of thing. The sponges/cleaning supplies desparately needed to be changed and the dish soap looked like it had been watered down. There aren't really a lot of options for Hokitika so I say this place is just fine for one night but I definitely don't think I would want to stay here longer.

Stayed here for two nights on my way up the West Coast. Cheapest place in town, but doesn't feel cheap: clean, well-maintained, all the facilities you'd expect in a good backpackers, and a very pleasant and helpful owner-operator. Literally across the street from where InterCity drops you off, too. Added bonus is the cheapest internet I've seen in NZ at NZ$2 p.h. or NZ$5 per day (library next door has free internet, but it's time limited and not open 24 hours, obviously). Hoki is not party central, but is a pleasant, laid-back beach town to rest up for a couple days. It's got a good museum, a decent golf course, great long beach... and a huge wheelbarrow!

Room Tip: The largest dorm room was bright and airy, which was great. Might get pretty warm in there after a s...

if you check in early you have to go to the jewelry store to get the key and pay
there is really no one to give you any info, or ask any questions as the people working at the store are busy
the hostel is pretty clean, i stayed in a 8 bed shared dorm
it felt very cramped
there is a kitchen and a common area
the internet in the common area didn't work
overall it was ok for one night, if i stayed longer i would look into other hostels in Hokitika

Hi to all
We have taken over mountain jade Backpackers as of early May 2010 and have made a few changes to the layout of the rooms, all linen supplied plus we have taken out beds in two of the dorm rooms to make it more comfortable for people.
In the next month we will putting up a wall and door in between the lounge and rooms to make it quieter as well as taking the double bunk beds out of the double rooms and putting in standard double beds for more comfort.
We welcome all and hope everybody has a great stay in Hokitika.
