“Scenic walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

Great place to spend an afternoon hiking. Scenery was beautiful, water color, views, etc; just gorgeous. There is no industry nearby so the air is pure and smells great. Wonderful place for a day trip.

“It 's worth the drive!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

Hokitika Gorge is a 30 minute drive from Hokitika town centre. We were driving down from Franz Josef to Greymouth and decided to take a de-tour to visit the Gorge after seeing a picture of the Gorge. The drive itself was smooth from the town center with some confusion when the road diverged in between and the GPS was not helpful. But then from then on the road was well marked and didn't face any problem in reaching the Gorge.

When we reached the car park we were the only visitors and we missed the real walk and went through the service road - had to climb uphill, but it was a scenic walk. If one were to take the walking track, in the first 3-4 minutes, you will have the first look out point. In around 7-8 minutes, you will reach the small hanging bridge. The view from the Bridge is unbelievable - I have never seen such a vibrant color in a gorge ever before. From the bridge another 2 minute walk lead you the rock edge above the water. The scenery is lovely with calm and serene surroundings. Also, as with other attractions in NZ there is no crowd or commotion and the place guarantees utmost peace in the most scenic settings.

As the gorge is 30 km from the town center many people give this a miss - but please do make it a point to visit the Gorge if you have time. It is really worth the drive!

“A Place of Beauty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

Visited Hokitika Gorge in October 2012. Its about 25-30 mins drive out of Hokitika, but very well signed and easy to get to. From the car park, a short forest walk brings you to the gorge and the bridge. After crossing the bridge, the path leads you down to the waters edge. The day we went there had been a lot of rain in the week previous so the water level was high. However, it was a clear day and the water looked beautiful... Recommend giving it a visit!!

Well worth the longish drive and short hike to see this. The color of the water is unbelievable, pictures don't do it justice!

“Well worth the trip even when it is raining!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

We arrived in Hokitika and the weather slowly deterirated. Undeterred we set off to see the gorge and were rewarded with some specatcular views of blue water contrasting with the bright green foliage. A short (5 minutes) walk along a well made path gets you to a bridge over the gorge and the opportunity to see the whole thing from the other side. Beautiful location!
