“Pleasant stay in Greymouth”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2009

My wife and I stayed one night. The hosts Shirley and Alistair were very pleasant and showed us how to shear a sheep, how their sheep dogs could perform and feed some eels in the near by stream.

Thery made an excellent recommendation for Jones restaurant for diner in Greymouth which has a limited selection.

This is a nice homestay option in Greymouth.

Oak Lodge has changed hands since the previous 2 reviews were written, however the quality hasn't changed at all.

Shirley and Alastair are now the hosts, and are friendly, knowledgeable about the area, and go out of their way to make sure you have a good stay.

We were greeted with coffee and cake when we arrived, and invited to join Shirley and Alastair for a drink before we went out to find dinner in town.

We stayed in the blue room, one of the smaller (and cheaper) of the rooms, fantatic value for money considering the facilities. We saw some of the other room when they were empty, and they all looked spacious and comfortable. The guest lounge was well equipped, with teas (fruit and normal) and coffee, the wireless internet quick, and the spa just perfect for relaxing after a day out sight seeing.

Alastair took us for a walk around the property and we had fun feeding sheep and eels.

Shirley cooks fantatic muffins for breakfast (as well as a full cooked offering if wanted)

We managed to leave our swimming togs behind, and Shirley even took the trouble to email us to let us know, and posted them onto our next stop for us.

If we are ever back in the area we will book in here again.

My husband, 2 children (12 & 9 yrs.), & I stayed at the Oak Lodge Bed and Breakfast one night on 28 March. The lodge is about a 5-minute drive north of the town center of Greymouth and about a 25 - 30-minute drive from Purakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blow Hole.

Our rooms were spacious and elegantly decorated. My husband & I had and ensuite room with king-sized bed and our children had a room with two twin-sized beds with a bathroom across the hall from their room. The home was truly lovely with a game room, massage room, sauna, outdoor pool & hot tub, and a guest lounge area overlooking the mountains and pastures. There were even small bowls of candy in each room and a little plate of cookies in the lounge area. Nothing was overlooked.

Colette & Brian were very welcoming and gracious hosts. The morning we left, my children enjoyed helping Colette feed the hens and sheep and gather eggs before breakfast. Our breakfast was cooked to order - simply delicious.

Would very highly recommend this lovely bed and breakfast!!

We stayed at Oak Lodge for 2 nights between Christmas and New Year 2007 as a relaxing break from driving around New Zealand's beautiful South Island.

We stumbled across this gem of a B&B when Googling for lodgings around Greymouth - I can't believe nobody's raved about it on TripAdvisor yet!

This place could be used to demonstrate how a B&B should be run. It blends the luxury of an expensive hotel with the friendliness and intimacy of a B&B, and hosts Brian and Colette work hard to provide a welcoming atmosphere.

Their house is awesome, each guest room is large and well decorated with huge queen-sized beds and en-suites, even giving a private balcony to relax on. They also have a guest lounge with coffee-making facilities and big leather couches to encourage guests to mingle - we enjoyed an entertaining evening shooting the breeze with Dutch, German and American couples also staying at Oak Lodge.

The hosts are knowledgeable and witty and always happy to socialise, basically going by the philosophy that their house is yours during your stay.

The icing on the cake is that they offer an excellent place to relax - outdoor pool, hot tub, indoor sauna, plus a treatment room for one of the visiting therapists you can book. We had reflexology and a massage, both reasonably priced and of good quality.

They also have chickens and sheep on site, which they're happy for visiting guests to feed.

We also found an excellent restaurant in Greymouth called Joneses which we enjoyed so much we went back to a second time! Great food, unobtrusive jazz and blues music and excellent service, all at a good price. What more can you ask for?!

All in all we had a great time at Oak Lodge and would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to take time out from exploring the South Island and pamper themselves. You won't regret it!
