“The only reason to go to Greymouth!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

It was an absolute treat to stay here. We were greeted by their pick up service, shown around by the friendly staff and automatically impressed by the place itself. It was warm and welcoming while maintaining an interesting vibe due to the décor and variety of art beautifully spread throughout. It was consistantly immaculate over our three days stay. The kitchen was extremely well kept and presented. Everthing matched - a bit of a novelty for those far from home! The rooms were lovely, each person having their own bedside table, plug socket and lamp. As a bonus, the bunks aren't connected which makes for a really comfortable sleep. They offer quite a few extras and such as free bikes, free kayaks and a cheap hot-tub with little random perks along the way too. The crowd staying were all so friendly, likely to be helped by the absence of a TV. You can easily walk to the shops and the town however there might not be too much going on. I found Greymouth itself is completely missable but the hostel is a perfect place to rest your bones for a day or two between stops.

Room Tip: It's BBH so it's affordable!

I wish I could have stayed there longer. Global Village is tastefully decorated with wood carvings and batik wall hangings. My single upstairs room was painted a sunshine yellow with art on the walls. Imagine my surprise when I opened the door to my room and saw a pair of fushia towels twisted in the shape of swans. That's class! Yes, I said TWO towels. The shared bathroom had vessel sinks. Remarkable! The kitchen was well lit and had everything you need. There were deorated sitting rooms that offered privacy and comfort. GV had kayaks and bicycles for use. The staff was superb. A New World grocery store was a mile away and the beach was a little further. Greymouth is a wonderful little town with lots of things to do nearby. I loved GV and the town too!!!

Room Tip: My upstairs room was quiet and looked out over a wooded area. It was close to the bathrooms and the...

Greymouth to be fair is kinda boring but a great place for a stopover. However, this hostel is absolutely brilliant. Not only are the rooms individually decorated with beautifully crafted wooden structures and ornaments but the staff are very friendly an it is excellent value for money. A must stay.

The receptionist was great he was very friendly and knowledgable. The facilities were great, very modern and clean. The kitchen was very well equiped. The lounge area was really cozy it made us want to spend more time there. There is also free bikes and kayak. The room was great very comfortable and quiet it also had lots of paintings and decorations in the room and throughout the backpackers. I would recomend this place as a must stay if you travel to greymouth. It is really good value for money.

Nice backpackers, tidy and well maintained, bikes should get more attention but otherwise it was best start in NZ.

This is the kind of hostel you dream of. The decor is amazing. The owners took real care when creating this place. There is stuff all around from every country you can think of. It has so much character. I stayed in a six bed dorm, which was down the stairs. It was a bit loud with people walking in the kitchen above so I would say stay on the floor with the kitchen if possible. Otherwise totally awesome. The owners are so nice. It's almost too bad this is in Greymouth because I didn't find it that interesting there, but it is worth the stop just to stay here.

Worried it might be a typical backpackers place with loads of annoying backpackers but pleasantly surprised that there was a real mix of punters staying here.
Massive communal living areas from downstair lounge with sofas and books to upstairs dining area and big kitchen.
Lots of toilets and showers. They were so popular and busy we had to opt for a twin rather than a double. Bed was comfortable and was quiet at night and easy to sleep.
Great location. Reasonably priced.
Guy at reception was very approachable and went out of his way to go through the options at franz josef and fox glaciers with up to date knowledge about franz josef. Booked our trip for us (do the ice explorer - helicopter there and back with 3 hours on the ice)
Cannot fault the place. Stay here.
