“Awesome camping in the heart of G-Town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

Spend 1 night here at the end of a 3 week trip and it was just great. We pitched our tent in the back yard for $16 each and were welcomed by Baz the gorgeous golden retriever! Lucky to get free wifi while we stayed and the lounge and kitchen areas were well equipped. Would stay there again.

I stayed in the Unicorn room.

This hostel is handy if you are doing a long drive down the West coast and want to break it up in Greymouth. I think this hostel would also be fine for a longer stay if there is anything you want to do in the area or you just want to relax. Nice big common room, phone in the hallway. Friendly atmosphere.

The hostel has lots of character - it is a period building and the rooms are animal themed with fun cartoonish paintings. I agree with other reviewers about the mild musty smell - the whole hostel had a bit of the feeling of a church hall you might stay in with the brownies.

I didn't use the kitchen but it looked big and clean. The shower and toilet and my room were clean.

The man who greeted me was friendly and polite and showed me around properly when I arrived. There is a sweet friendly dog and a cute cat on the property.

Within the main building the wifi was fast and had good signal. You get a free voucher for some limited wifi.

I think the unicorn room would be ok for couples - it is outside the main hostel building so it is quite private and is very quiet. However for me, this room had some big downsides and I wished I had stayed in a dorm or got a room in the main building. The downsides were (1) wifi signal does not reach the room and (2) as you are not in the main building you have to go outside before you can use the shower or the toilet. This is particularly annoying at night when you have to go around the whole building and then press in a code to get in (fiddly in the dark!), the Tv also did not seem to work in that room (possibly just me though).

The dorm rooms looked nice and spacious. In the one I saw into they had single beds rather than bunk beds also.

There is no parking actually in the hostel but you can park for free in the car park that is opposite the hostel (10 seconds walk) where there seemed to be lots of space.

This is a nice place..
The room was good but there were a limited amount of bathrooms and toilets (or we just didn't find them).

It's good if your just passing trough Greymouth but I'm not sure I would choose to stay here if I was going to be in town for long :)

We stayed here for a night and really liked the place. The lady at the reception was very helpful, explained us things over the map about what to see and where to eat etc. The rooms are theme based and are beautiful. We stayed in the Zebra room and it was pretty cute. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are sparkling clean. Kitchen is well kept and I have never seen such clean kitchen in any of the backpackers so far. Its close to all eating and shopping places. A must stay if u plan to have a stress free vacation.
Highly remcommend staying here.

My sister and I stayed 1 night in November 2012. The owner was very welcoming and hospitable! He even provided us with a file/booklet of eating places nearby and was happy to recommend places to go to.

We stayed in a Zebra room and it was really nicely done up! Everything matched the theme of the room. There was ample pillows and the double bed was very comfortable. Sufficient power points located in the room. This place comes with (limited, I think it was 20mb?) of wireless internet. You can purchase more at reasonable prices.

Bathrooms are shared and located outside. However I never had to queue to use them. They were spacious and clean. The kitchen is a joy to cook in! Very nice kitchen. They have a TV room (where you can store your luggage on your last day), and a very comfy dining/sitting room with a (in tune) piano, where you can hang out with fellow travelers. They have a spa tub located outside as well! (Didnt get to use it but looked nice).

Overall, this is a fantastic place to stay!! It is near the train station and walking distance into town. Tour buses often do drop offs/pick up from Noah's Ark as well. Kudo's to the friendly staff for making the place such a wonderful place to stay. The themed rooms were the highlight, and would easily match hotel standards.

This is one of the nicest backpackers I've stayed in. It's in a former monastery(?) and is a really beautiful building. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are lovely (really nice view from the giraffe room at the front!) only stayed here for 1 night so didn't use some of the facilities, but the bathrooms and kitchen are really nice :)

I would definitely recommend the nearby Monteith's brewery tour, it's only a 10 minute walk from the backpackers & they do food too :D
