“Nice place to stay however winter is not working”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

I was in Greymouth for a stopover before heading to Fox Glacier.
Arrived on the cold winter night. Checked into the room. It was big.Was so happy when I was told that there was 2 heater. One wall heater and one mobile heater. Unfortunately, the wall heater broke down. We were offered a water bottle as replacement. As the room was big, the room was very cold. Had trouble falling asleep at night.

We're sorry that this was your experience. Having learnt that the wall heater in this room was broken we arranged to have it fixed. They are now all working fine. In winter we have either a wall heater and an extra oil heater in each room, or a very large oil heater. We also provide warm blankets for each bed, in addition to the duvets on the beds.

I was stuck in Greymouth because the Intercity to Fox was cancelled. I think it was the best decision to stay here for the night. My friend and I stayed for one night in the female share room. It's pink. The place was very homey and welcoming. Loved the free breakfast thing (I think it's only for winter?) and yep, Bez. The only thing was, the room I had was a bit hard to warm up. I guess it's because of the high ceiling. Overall I had a nice stay in this backpacker.

Myself and my girlfriend stayed for 2 nights at Noahs Ark Backpackers and thought it was the best hostel we have stayed in. The themed rooms are a really nice idea and actually look pretty cool as well.
The kitchen facilities are excellent and there is plenty of room to cater for everyone staying there. They also supply a spice rack of herbs which was a nice small addition to the kitchen.
There are 2 communal rooms which are both spacious and cater for people who would either like to watch TV in one and for people who want a bit more of a chill (or a go on the piano) in the second.
You receive 50mb each per day worth of internet or 1hour a day per person if you use their computers.
There are a good amount of toilets and showers as well so you shouldn't really encounter a queue. Theres also a Hot tub which would be awesome in the warmer months.
Bez the house dog is a cool addition to the family and is very friendly, although he does get a bit close to a blanket he carries sometimes.
The location is the only shame about Noahs Ark as there isnt much going on in Greymouth but it is only 30mins away from Punakaiki and he drive there is stunning.

On our one year round trip in New Zealand we accidentally landed in Greymouth and stayed in Noah's Ark. It was really one of the best hostels we've stayed in so far! Every room is themed with a different animal, with a lot of cute figurines and toys standing around giving it a really homely feeling. The hosts are exceptionally nice and helpful. They even pick you up at the train station although it's only a five minutes walk.
During our stay they offered free breakfast and wifi which is a real plus and not so common. Really appreciated this. Rooms and showers are all clean and big enough, kitchen is well equipped and was tidy. The fireplace in the lounge was really cosy for the cold evenings. They have a nice dog (and a cat, but it's hardly in the house) hanging around the place. They also have a spa pool but due to the bad weather we couldn't try it.
So you can easily spend a couple of days here, and if you have your own transport you can also explore the surroundings.

I had planned to only stay for a day or two but found the hosts friendly, helpful and very welcoming and they seamed to always have a smile upon their faces and the accommodation was very warm with two fires going and the place was very clean... so I stayed longer. the building has good security with cameras in various areas including the kitchen which was a welcome relief as some of my food had gone missing in other backpackers I had stayed at, but not here. this is an animal themed accommodation and has a very friendly 3year old dog named Bez (I wanted to take him home with me) and a cat named Jess...
I am recommending Noah's Ark as a must stay place if you are ever passing through Greymouth... the upstairs balcony offers an amazing view over the city with gorgeous sunsets...

We had a great stay at Noahs. The staff are friendly and welcoming and have knowledge of the local area and the activities. The rooms and common areas are clean and spacious. The prices are very reasonable especially you when you take into consideration the free breakfast and free wifi on arrival. Had a great stay and will come back.

Fabulous place. We had the giraffe room which was large, warm, and very comfortable. Shame there's nothing much to do in Greymouth or we'd have stayed longer.

Great dog wanders about too.
