“A great welcome to New Zealand”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2010

We arrived at Lupton Lodge early in the morning, after flying to Whangarei from Canada. Andy offered us an upgrade to the Blue Room, as the Gold Room was not yet made up. It was a very comfortable room and had a door leading out to a private veranda and garden area which were very peaceful. We loved the country setting. One of the reasons we chose Lupton Lodge was so we would not have to drive to dinner on our first night in New Zealand. Andy prepared us a delicious dinner, which we had chosen ahead of time from a menu of five mains and two desserts. And we loved the Lupton Special Breakfast.

Lupton Lodge is a great find for the business traveller who covers Northland area or who is coming up to Whangarei. I have used Lupton Lodge on several occassions and it is my prefered option for accommodation. This is because it is so much nicer than any hotel (particularly any that are in Whangarei which are not value for money and are not very nice in my opinion). It is peaceful and relaxing location after a long day of work. It is great having a good size room and being able to eat onsite in the dinning room. They cater for my dietary needs (gluten free) which is great. I enjoy being able to unwind after a busy day with a walk around the area which is lovely with it being in the countryside. Yet it is close to everywhere I need to get to for business. My theory is when travelling for work I might as well stay somewhere nice that helps me relax after a long day and Lupton Lodge meets this need!

When travelling for work, hotels can be very bland and all much of a muchness. Lupton Lodge is a wonderful alternative. Set in picturesque gardens (mind you it always seems to be wintery and stormy when I visit) the historic house has charm. The rooms are really spacious and comfortable.

The hosts are so helpful and make you feel very welcome - a home away from home. And the wonderful meals make an extra treat. And much better value than a chain hotel. While it's a little way out of Whangarei, its an easy drive and you really feel like you're getting away and having a break.
I'd definitely recommend staying here. I love it.

We have stayed at Lupton Lodge a number of times now and are always more than satisfied. It offers superior accommodation and facilities combined with the personal service of a family-run hotel.

The free, fast wireless broadband is a definite plus and puts Lupton Lodge ahead of many other hotels in the area.

Cooked to order breakfast are a five-star touch.

We're very happy to recommend Lupton Lodge and will be regular visitors in the future.

Stayed 1 night in February. Room was hot and small, no air, other people in hotel were very loud, we didn't sleep well. Owners not very friendly to us when we asked about the noise the night before. My partner, who is French, didn't feel welcome.

ANDYCHEF, Owner at Lupton Lodge, responded to this review, August 4, 2010
We were very disappointed to read this review as we pride ourselves on offering guests excellent value for money and friendly service. We would like to address each of the points above. One of our rooms is smaller than the rest and we price it lower accordingly as we believe that people travelling on a budget should still be able to stay in nice places with great facilities. The Gold Room has the same facilities of the other rooms so size is the only aspect that you are paying less for. As there are large opening windows and air-conditioning in all our rooms we were surprised that these guests had trouble with the temperature and airflow. February is Northland’s hottest month but we put in air-conditioning last year so that guests would be comfortable irrespective of the weather. Because the guest accommodation is a historic house, not a purpose-built hotel, there are occasional issues with noise from other guests, however we have carefully positioned each room so that bedrooms are not directly adjacent to each other to minimise general noise coming through. We apologise to these guests for not coming across as more sympathetic about the noise on that night as we treat any guest discomfort very seriously. In regards to the last comment about the French partner, we have a lot of French guests and many who return on subsequent trips. We do our best to communicate with all our foreign guests to the best of their linguistic ability and try to speak French ourselves where English is limited. Unfortunately when there is one member of the party who speaks better English it can sometimes be difficult to get the opportunity to build a rapport with the other person, however this is not meant as an affront and we sincerely apologise to the reviewer's partner if he felt that it was in any way.

Imagine a stock standard motel. Think of the opposite. An overall stay worth only the best compliments. Room, bed (for the first time in 5 business trips to NZ I woke up with that 'where am I?' feeling), dinner (moroccan chicken breast 1 night & lamb shank the other), breakfast, the grounds, area, library/communal room and Andy's openly honest hospitality (never met Karen) all made for a relaxing (even though on business) and very comfortable stay.
