“Excellent boutique experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

It is an old house beautifully restored in the style of old Tuscany villa, maybe without many antics but with enough rich furniture and subtle decoration to give you feel of understated luxury. We had two adjoining rooms that I believe can be also rented separately. Spacious, with high ceilings and high quality wooden furniture rooms were very cozy and full of atmosphere.
Breakfast was a la carte with three choices, fresh juice and coffee/tea. Dinner menu had 8 or 9 positions to choose from but the food was delicious. And all was cooked by our host and owner Andy and served in full of ambience small dining room.
House is surrounded by natural garden, there is a small swimming pool with two sunchairs, in the small cottage across the main building is a library and a pool table.
On the premises lives very friendly cat and our son was in love with it from the first moment.
The area is beautiful and, after we later have been in Paihia, we decided it is more attractive than Bay of Island. The only thing that I can think of not being perfect was the house being very acoustic because of the wooden structure.
I recommend this place to any couple looking for a romantic stay, it has a charm, quality and location, worth the money you pay. And if you travel with small child as we did, you will still profit from the atmosphere and renting the unit with the lounge will give you privacy.

We stayed for three nights using Whangarei as a base for a fast paced tour of Northland - no regrets at all although you do need to enjoy driving. Andy's welcome was warm; he kindly served us dinner for our arrival - the experience was enhanced by us eating outside on the veranda. The Red Room was a great size with a separate dressing room and ensuite (but shower cubicle a little snug!). Breakfasts were excellent, best we've had. Overall, very good and ideal for a couple looking for a little luxury out of town.

Husband and I stayed for just 1 night but would have been happy to stay longer. Lovely welcome, beautiful surroundings & great room. The house is obviously loved and very well restored. Beautiful garden & orchard to explore amidst very tranquil surroundings. Every comfort thought of for the weary traveller. Can highly recommend a stay here.

We enjoyed our time at Lupton Lodge and Andy was a great host. It was comfortable, homely and clean. Andy is a decent chef and cooked us dinner for a reasonable cost. Breakfast was included and was good. Andy will do your laundry for $5 a load.
If staying here you must go and visit the Kingdom of Zion, which is only 20 mins drive. Amazing experience seeing happy beautiful lions and tigers.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights during our vacation in New Zealand. It is absolutely beautiful. The family running the lodge is very hospitable and accommodating. The room was nice and the on sweat bathroom was large and clean. The decode is nice and the property is beautiful. I highly recommend this place. The food was great as well!

Room Tip: We stayed in the "Gold Room".

I was initially a bit concerned by the fact that Lupton Lodge is a few kilometres out of Whangarei, but after staying I must say that it was worth the extra drive. The location offers quiet and peace in a lovely 1896 country house that has been lovingly restored and cared for by its current owners. Andy was on hand for any local information and cooked us a lovely breakfast in the morning. Would recommend without hesitation and hopefully will visit again in the future.

After a non-stop day of business, it was nice to stay here. Andy was welcoming and professional. The room was spotlessly clean. Bed comfortable, good linen, quality furnishings. I pre-ordered dinner as I knew I would be tired and it was very tasty. Breakfast was good too. The dining room could have been a bit warmer but that wouldn't stop me from coming back again. Highly recommended.

Hi Stephanie
ManyThanks for your great review - hopefully see you again.
I am really sorry, I didn't realise you were cold whilst in the dining room - there is a heat pump in that room, so I could have turned that on (or up) if I had realised.
