“FANTASTIC!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2010

We have just returned from NZ to the UK our daughter was married in Parua Bay on Sat 11th Dec. We had been booked into Kauri Villas for our stay. On our arrival we were spell bound by this beautiful place, met by the lovely Drew, who made us feel so welcome from the start.
We stayed in the self contained lodge, which was just LOVELY. A perfect place to relax from the husstle and stress of a wedding. immaculatly clean and extremely well equipped, with lovely attention to detail. A perfect retreat for anyone visiting the area. The views are breathtaking.
Later we had the pleasure of meeting Susie, Drews wife, she was such a delight.
Breakfast was excellent, with a choice of anything you liked.
wonderful place to stay. Thankyou so much.

What a wonderful retreat -- the stay couldn't have been a better example of New Zealand hospitality. The Kauri Villas website photos and write-up are completely accurate -- what is presented there is what you see when you arrive. We arrived in Auckland at 5:30 in morning after 13 hour flight and drove 2 hours to Whangarei Heads to Kauri Villas. We were greeted warmly by hosts Drew and Susie Barlow (and a friendly dog and cat) and were shown around their beautiful property which has a lovingly restored Victorian home, a spectacular view of Parua Bay, a terrace with swimming pool, a small field of 8 sheep and a calf, and their very own "bush" with waterfall and hiking trail. After settling in, we were happy to have Drew's advice and hand-drawn map on where to go and what to do for the rest of the day -- walks along the scenic Ocean Beach shore and sand dunes followed by chowder at The Deck. He then invited us to join his family and friends at a very special event -- the release of three juvenile kiwi birds into the wild by a local conservancy group which had raised the birds from eggs until they were large enough to fend for themselves in the bush. Since most native New Zealanders have never seen a live kiwi, it was an honor and a trip highlight for us to participate. After the long day we had dinner with the Barlow family and their two young workers from abroad. The next day, following a great breakfast with home-made jams and bread and fresh eggs from their own chickens, Drew outlined the most scenic drive to Bay of Islands via the Old Russell Road. Leaving after only one day was difficult.

I visited the Kauri Villas in Sep./Oct.2010 and found a very quite, nice and friendly place. The owners are easy going and experts for things to do and explore nearby. The hiking traks around Ocean Beach and Urquharts Bay are just amazing. The room had plenty of space (3 bed room) and a clean bathroom and separate kitchen. Further I could use the washing machine and free Internet.
I can recommend this place and would check-in again. The dog and the 2 cats are great.

A group of 4, we visited Whangarei for the marathon and chose Kauri Villas for its beautiful rooms and flexibility of accommodation, as our group could have been larger.

From my initial enquiry I was impressed with the customer service offered by Drew and Sue - prompt response, informative and willing to offer us flexibility.

On arrival we were stunned by the beautiful buildings, surroundings and views. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming, and genuinely interested in our comfort.

The logde in which we stayed was well appointed and scrupulously clean.

Drew and Sue are masters at the art of hospitality - there when we wanted them, informative and helpful, but also happy to leave us to our own devices.

We will definitely recommend Kauri Villas to friends and family.

My visit to Whangarei Heads was work related; attending a meeting/seminar at the Northland Events Centre. A pleasant, leisurely 15 min drive to Kauri Villas, followed by dinner at the Parua Bay Tavern (3 mins) drive and a very comfortable nights sleep. An early morning walk on a lovely country road and a simply superb omelette for breakfast by Drew set me up well for the rest of the day.
Their hospitality was top-notch and they should be proud of what they have achieved with their renovations - a very beautiful home.

On a trip around North Island to see friends and family, and stayed at Kauri Villas at the recommendation of a friend - what a gem! As you come into the grounds the house is pretty and full of character, but nothing prepares you for the view over Parua Bay... it was just breathtaking! The family (and v friendly dog!) were incredibly welcoming, and I was given a very cosy, comfortable room with ensuite shower room. I really enjoyed the food, which was always served with good humour and great attention to detail.

In fact I enjoyed my stay so much that I made a detour to stay another couple of nights after my travels. I can't recommend this place highly enough; it is a very special place, quiet and beautiful, with a very warm and friendly atmosphere, and I would love to go there again.

PS Tried to upload photos, but having a problem - will post some as soon as I can.
