“Mosquitos!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013 via mobile

Just stayed here 5 nights and I've not experienced so many Mosquitos in one area.! Ok it's been a hot dry summer but sitting out (or even inside) of an evening and the insects get troublesome. Flies seemed attracted and maybe the estuary lower down the hill effected a good breeding ground?
My room (1) had a fly screen affixed to the open window which was a godsend!
Some excellent walking up the hill through bush reserves and along the river reserves also..but sadly as for Whengerei itself .. Well apart from the "Basin" Marina area.. It's one big warehouse type blocks of garish shop outlets and commercial enterprises. Hospitality was good at the hostel, clean and friendly but be aware they do allow local unemployed to stay (who whilst I stayed enjoyed a drink or two too many!).
It spoilt my stay in an otherwise nice hostel well run with good position overlooking the town. On foot it is up a steepish hill across the River from the isite (but there is a more direct shortcut) signposted off the main Riverside Drive dual carriageway (the 3rd road from the bridge "Dundass Road".) Would I stay again... Mmm sadly maybe not if I'm honest. I understand the previous manager (from talking with a regular guest) banned certain undesirable types from frequenting the hostel.. Because of past problems in this respect. The new manageress needs to take similar decisions perhaps?

Downside is that this youth hostel is situated up on the hill about 10-15 minutes walk from most of the bus operators who service town.

Upside is that the hostel is in a nice quiet surburban street with good views over town. It only has a small number of rooms so that it is easy to get to use the kitchen and toilet facilities whenever you need without the queueing that often happens in bigger hostels

A really nice backpackers with some excellent walks close by.

Andy and all her staff have always been very helpful. They welcome everybody into this hostel like it's there home. You won't be disappointed when you stay here. Great view of the city at night and centrally located.

Room Tip: if get get room one, do not take the bottom bunk on the first bed on the right.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

My friend and I drove from Auckland up the east coast of Northland, down the west coast and back. We stayed here the first night of our road trip and thought it was so cozy and welcoming, not to mention the great nighttime view of the city below. The lady at the front desk was super nice and gave us a ton of information on the area. We stayed in a twin room in the main building which was the most spacious YHA room I've ever stayed in. We loved this place so much that we stayed here again the night before we had to be back in Auckland.

A note about winter: The little fireplace does a great job of warming the building in the evening but the rooms all have large windows and get quite cold. There are heaters available, so get there early and turn it on. The bathrooms were also quite cold because the window is left cracked open all day.

A note about safety for the nearby glow worm caves: The access road isn't very well lit and my friend and I (both female) both stated to each other that wouldn't have ventured out there at night alone. On our way back, a man followed us up the path back to the hostel, making weird sounds and causing us to noticeably increase our pace. He turned back about halfway up the path. I'm sure this was an isolated incident, but please be wary.

What impressed me the most about the Whangarei YHA was the staff. It is run by a full-time manager, rather than young travelers. This gave the place a much more professional feel. The manager set us up with a map and directions to to the local waterfalls and glow worms, and even assisted us with a mistaken double booking at a different YHA hostel.

We spent two nights in a double room, which was spotless. The kitchen and common areas and bathrooms were all very clean as well. The office is closed from 11 to 5, but there are lockers outside where you can store your bags.
