These luxurious gardens really are a gem and sometimes under-rated by the locals and missed by visitors. The extensive park is nestled along the Manawatu river at the entrance to the city and has NZ natives as well as a huge wide variety of flowers introduced specimen trees. There are many cycle and walking tracks and a miniature train which children love. The cycle track is part of an extensive along the river track. As Palmerston North is flat, cycling is popular and facilities great. The excellent glass house has a wide variety of tropical plants including begonias and orchids. Adjacent to that is a bird aviary with natives such as the kea as well as exotic parrots, peacocks and water birds. There is an art deco style children's paddling pool. The rose garden is the largest rose trail ground in the southern hemisphere. It is also a site for weddings and special occasions.
Each season has an amazing show - the magnolias and rhododendrons on October/November, roses in summer, autumn leaves and in spring an extensive cherry blossom drive - it feels like you are walking under clouds of pink.
