“Absolutely wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2014

If you want somewhere where you can hear the birds tweeting, wind gently blowing in the trees and at one with nature then this is the place for you. We are from up North so it was great to experience a different environment, but still feel like we are in the country.
We spent 2 nights in the Lodge and it was fantastic. The accommodation was just what we needed, everything was supplied and the company was great.
We used the mountain bikes and went riding along the bush trails, even though we had not ridden in awhile, Claire and Adrian gave us get advice on which trails to take.
Great for families or couples, lots to do and see and you are only 2 km from Margret River town site, not that you would know it in the bush setting.
Claire, Adrian and staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome, comfortable and happy.
We will be back and I have told all our family and friends to stay here for the Stress free getaway.

Room Tip: There is a range of accommodation for you to choose from, camp sites, shared accommodation, safari t...

I was looking for a place to escape the city for a few days and after a quick squiz at Wharncliffe’s website – I knew this was the place for me.
As I drove up the driveway through the most beautiful Karri forrest, any thoughts of work, the rush of the city, traffic etc, just melted away and I found myself on Wharncliffe time.
It’s not your average caravan and camping site – because its like the facilities were made to fit in with the natural surroundings and not the other way around. The campsites weren't on top of each other and most of them back onto the forest. Its rustic – back to nature. Its also so damn good to see a tourism operator that is committed to treading lightly – they’ve got some wicked solar panels, it’s not lit up like a Christmas tree at night, so you make your way back to your campsite by torchlight – and this creates the most beautiful atmosphere… the stars were awesome!
I met some great travellers from around the world and I enjoyed exploring the walking trails in the National Park. I also really liked the fact that in under 15 minutes I could walk into town and get my fix of gourmet food after exhausting my stocks of tinned tuna and canned baked beans (note:didn't realise they had a camp kitchen and some BBQ's).

Basically, I loved staying within the National Park and left feeling really relaxed. I’ll be back for sure!

Room Tip: The unpowered sites are nice and secluded and back onto some Peppermint trees. Beautiful!

Hi Lisa, the driveway is magnificent... I still get blown away by the majestic Karri's even after driving up it so often! Really glad that you enjoyed what is different and special about Wharncliffe Mill... we love having people here that are 'in to' nature. Hope you can stay longer next time you visit!!!

We had come to Margaret River for the Leeuwin Concert and wanted to stay out of town and away from the crowds, that's where the positives stopped. The park is lovely and shady and the weather was perfect but the maintenance of the park is let down in some area's. The undercover shed was very dusty, the barbecues are not cleaned regularly.
Our main concern was the lighting at night time, there is none! The bathrooms are in darkness once you turn the light after you leave the bathroom. as there is only gravel to walk on everywhere this is a safety concern more so at night if you have to use the bathroom.
When we came back from the Concert the camp was in darkness apart from our van light and our site light which we had left on. Surely some bollard solar lights would even be suitable.
In the bathrooms there are no paper towels or even a hand dryer to dry your hands, there are no hooks above the wooden benches to hang towels or clothes, somewhere to put your soap and shampoo while in the shower would have been nice to and the door to the Ladies bathroom doesn't even close.
For a camp that charges the same as some of the other camps in the area we feel it is lacking in certain necessities for a comfortable stay and certainly the safety side as in lack of lighting.

Hi Jodee, thanks for posting your review. I am really sorry your expectations were not met. We are not a traditional caravan park, we are inside a National Park and are very focused on the environment and providing a nature based experience. This does not suit everyone, and I am sure your review will help others to decide if it is for them. I will just comment on a few of your points, to clarify things for others reading this.

We turn lights off just after 9pm to conserve energy and so people can sleep. We have minimal general lighting as we strive to avoid light spill/light pollution so people can enjoy the starlit sky and the natural feeling of being in the forest. We do have torches in the office which people can borrow if they don’t bring their own.

With the old mill, being an open building in the bush, if we have not had rain for a while, it can get dusty. We clean the mill and the BBQ’s twice daily, and ask our guests to clean the BBQ’s after they use them – most are very considerate – I am sorry this was not the case on this occasion.

Again with paper towels and hand dryers, our focus is on conservation and we hope that people don’t mind using their own towels to reduce waste and energy use. There are hooks in all of the shower cubicles, though as you note they are not above the benches. Also - I have just checked the main door does shut – it just has a self-closer so it takes a minute (it is often wedged open though as the design of the ablutions allows for privacy even if the door is open to let maximum fresh air in).

A fantastic camp site and hostel with great facilities and a wonderful atmosphere.

Claire & Adrian are wonderful and ensure that everyone enjoys their stay!
The availability of sports equipment and lot's of picnic and fire pit areas is fantastic and we took full advantage of the bbqs.

We stayed in a four bed dorm that was part of the main social area and shared facilities.
This meant it was a little noisy during busy times, but Adrian was very good at making sure people were quiet after 9pm.

We would happily stay here again.

Hi Rich, Thanks for your review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay in spite of it being one of our busiest weekends of the year - being the Leeuwin Concert weekend! We hope you can stay with us again when things are a little quieter!!!

The perfect balance of bush and comfort! We stayed in a Safari Tent for three nights and it was amazing. The tents gave us the real bush experience, being tucked into the forests but without having to sleep on the ground. We had a full queen sized bed, power and our own personal front deck. The staff was so friendly, the facilities were squeaky clean and the silence at night was refreshing.
The camp also encourages sustainable living, running on solar energy, using compost bins, encouraging guests to limit their water usage AND I am pretty sure they had a veggie garden in the works! This place really knows how its done.

I would highly recommend staying here. We will certainly be back during the winter for some camp fires :)

Hi, thanks for your review and particularly your comments on our environmental initiatives. We are trying to demonstrate how people can experience sustainable living without giving up the creature comforts! We have wonderful crew on site who have environmental qualifications and are managing our environmental planning and implementation, and it has been amazing to have their expertise and assistance in guiding us. We hope you can come back and stay again when our vegie beds and the chicken's luxury lodgings is finished so you can see the next stage of our sustainability demonstration in action!

Have always wanted to stay in a Bush Retreat and this renovated former Mill was wonderful. About 1.5km to Margaret River town centre and set in a quiet Karri Marri forest, the ambience was comfortable, clean and relaxing. No flies or mosquitos. Wide spaces in-between the trees to camp in and park vehicles or choose one of the dorms or cabins. The nights were cool, early morning serene with forest birds foraging for food. Daytime, a few children riding their bicycles and people doing their chores unhurriedly.
An excellent choice of stay outside town in the bush in summer. Will definitively recommend to friends and family.

Room Tip: The 4 bed dorm in the main building shed is conveniently closest to the pingpong table, chairs, sofa...

Hi, thanks for posting your review and photos. It was interesting that you noted that there are not loads of flies and mosquitoes here.... heaps of people comment on that to us, and some of the locals suggest that it could be either the density of the surrounding forest or that some of the species of trees are a natural repellant.... either way - it seems to work for us!

We are really pleased that you and your family enjoyed your stay and would really appreciate you recommending Wharncliffe Mill to your friends and family.
