“A Couples Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

From the time we walked through the front door we knew we were going to enjoy a wonderful week. The decor was old world charm with black and white photographs adorning the foyer. Our room was impeccably decorated and oh so comfortable. We enjoyed breakfast each morning in the dinning room which overlooked manicured lawns and gardens. Each and everyone of the staff provided excellent service. Because we holidayed in Jan 2012 the weather was very hot and dry so we found ourselves every afternoon spending time in the pool. This was a great place to meet other guests and enjoy a wine or two. We thoroughly enjoyed the township of Margaret River and its surrounding areas. If you like your wines than Margaret River wineries are amongst the best. Basildene Mannor is the ideal couples retreat . We loved it and would go back. 10/10

Room Tip: The newer rooms are larger - but all are equally well positioned.

This is my third stay at Basildene Manor (July 1992, 2002, 2012 - this last just 3 days), it calls to me. It provides elegant respite from today's busy world and has the charm and elegance of an earlier era. Built by the Head Leewin Lighthouse Keeper for his family you can almost hear the laughter in the halls. as you look at the dozens of early family and regional photos hanging on the walls. The pictures or Henry's 1916 send off to WW I sparked the question of 'did he return ?' (answer - yes). It's easy to feel like part of the family. Breakfast overlooking the garden' is a treat. Tables laddened with food; spiced pears, poached apples, stewed rhubarb and a wide array of artfully cut fesh fruit are avialabe to top the tasty local yogurt and jams. There is a range of hot breakfasts to choose from all good - this time I discovered the fresh blueberry pancakes - talk about heaven! If it wasn't so far from Sydney I would be a more regular visitor. Although it feels quite rural 14 acres of manicured gardens, loaded with native birds (and a few bunnies) it is a short walk 1.2km to Margaret River's village. Wine tasting, art and gastonomy are the go for the area and Basildene provides the perfect base.

Room Tip: I like to stay in the original house - rooms are large and sunny

We stayed 3 nights in the May of 2011 so the weather albeit fine didn't allow us to enjoy the pool area wiyh the colourful birds and Roos in the distance forest area. The rooms we some of the best we have ever had. The Breakfast fare was excellent garnished with flowers. They had a wine tasting/talk in the basement lounge from a local Winery which added to the colour. A very quiet historic stately home/lodge atmosphere, we were told one of the guest 'complained' about the noise from a room next door..but it had no guests...so even a resident ghost! Its a 25/30 min stroll into Margaret River township passed paddocks of Large Kanagroos We took the Coach back top Pert from M' River which again was excellent. It was poosible to bus/trian but didn't suit our lazy time table.

Room Tip: We had rooms overlooking the garden pool area

If you want a superb luxury experience in Margaret River, then Basildene Manor is the place to stay. The first impression as you are in the driveway is of decadence from a bygone era. The century old stone property invites its visitors in as if to tell its stories from long ago. The staff at reception provided the warmest welcome and gave a tour of the property and a potted history of the place and invited us to feel at home. Our room was exceptionally appointed. The decor was stylishly modern but playing homage to its history such as the flat screen television mounted on the chimney of the fireplace in our room. In-room tea and coffee making facilities were provided along with plates, glasses, cutlery, wine glasses and waiters friend to open the wine bought from the local wineries. Relaxing in the the lounge with cheese and biscuits in front of the gas fire was a perfect way to end the day and regale tales with other guests and to plan where to go and what to do. The breakfast menu and service was superb and catered well for my own food allergies. This is a prestige establishment and is most highly recommended for visitors to Margaret River.

We stayed 2 nights at the Basildene Manor in the ground floor Semillon room. All the rooms have been refurbished and all I can say it looks absolutely fabulous. I have stayed here before it was revamped and thought it was ok, the grounds are just stunning, but with the refurbishment, it really is 5 star. We had a king size bed, a gorgeous courtyard, although the weather wasn't that good to sit out there. The bathroom is large with a large separate shower and a big bathtub (free standing). 2 handbasins. Great lighting in the bathroom and room itself, which sometimes is a problem. Carpets and furnishings are all tastefully done. Breakfast is lovely overlooking the gardens. We only had a continental breakfast, which was lovely anyway with orange/apple juice, yoghurts, fruits (all sorts) a large selection of home made jams, and yummy bread. Being an Accor Premiere Vacation Club member we got the room at a huge discount which was an extra bonus. About to try the devonshire teas that they provide for $10 per head. Thoroughly recommend to stay here

Room Tip: If you can get the garden view rooms, they would be the best, but at last minute booking and for wha...

Booked 3 nights at the Basildene Manor for my 40th birthday as a special treat. We were given a fantastic warm welcome and shown around the property and then to our room which was in the newer wing. The room was spacious and decorated beautifully and had a lovely small courtyard outside. The main house itself is very grand with lots of history and the manicured gardens are just gorgeous. The pool was closed for winter which was a shame.

However, a few things were not quite up to the standard you would expect considering the prices charged. There is no on-site restaurant (which we had expected there to be) and it is a good 20 min walk or a $10 taxi ride into town for dinner. Our room was not made up on the second day and (agreeing with the review from Gallowglas WA), we also found that the towels were of a low quality and the wifi was not working. We tried the breakfast on our second morning - although the buffet breakfast was perfectly nice, the cooked breakfast was very average compared to other local cafes (the scrambled and poached eggs had been microwaved) and at $29 a head, should've been of a much better quality (there was no indication on the menu of any local ingredients used for the hot food). On checking out, we expressed our concerns over the breakfast (whereby it was strongly denied that a microwave had been involved) and over the lack of making up of the room (apologies - computer error/admin error). An offer of a free devonshire tea at a later date to make up for the admin error was gladly accepted, we left and went to local cafe for breakfast. However, on checking our bill at the cafe, we found that we had been charged for breakfast over 2 days - so had to go back again and bring this to the attention of reception which was deemed as yet another admin error and the computer blamed. Offer of a refund of all breakfast charges was accepted happily, however, owing to another computer error, an immediate refund could not be processed. So - all in all, the property itself and the rooms are really lovely, but the whole experience just didn't quite live up to our expectations.

Dear Pooo32,
Firstly, HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY! Thank you for taking the time to post your review after your stay at Grand Mercure Basildene Manor. Its great to hear that you were given such a warm welcome and that you enjoyed the beautiful grounds and your room. Your comments regarding the service standards have been escalated to our Senior Property Manager for his attention. As you discovered, we do have a restaurant at The Manor which is for breakfast service only. Wi-Fi is available in the public areas of the property only. We would be grateful if you could let us know what lead you to believe that this was available in all rooms. My e-mail address is sharon.norburn@accorvacationclub.com.au. We are pleased that you were offered a Devonshire tea, and that all breakfast charges were refunded. We are sorry that Grand Mercure Basildene Manor did not live up to your expectations. Being regular visitors to Margaret River and decided to splash out on a romantic weekend for two. The property is lovely, the junior suite was large but for charging 5* prices its not quite 5* service. There were two, rather threadbare towels given per day (we had a room makeover included), the advertised free wifi in all rooms did not reach ou room in the new wing, the ipod player did not work. To make this place a luxury experience, a few small touches such bathrobes, new towels. The breakfast was average and overpriced, much better breakfast fare is available in town for half the price.

Dear GallowglasWA,
Thank you for taking the time to post your review after your stay at Grand Mercure Basildene Manor. We are pleased to read that you enjoyed the property, however, disappointed to hear that you felt the service was lacking. Our Senior Property Manager has been made aware of the towels and media hub not working. Our General Manager has been made aware of your comments regarding breakfast, which is usually such a great success with all guests. Wi - Fi is currently only available in the public areas of the property. It would greatly assist us if you could advise where you saw free Wi-Fi in all rooms advertised. My e-mail address is sharon.norburn@accorvacationclub.com.au. Again, we thank you for your review and we hope that you will give us the opportunity to service you better by returning to The Manor in the future.
