There are three magnificent caves in the Margaret River Region, one of which is the enormous Mammoth Cave. Mammoth Cave tours are self guided using an MP3 audio player and your self guided tour concludes with a walk through beautiful natural bushland and tall Karri trees. The cave itself is particularly interesting for the discovery of numerous fossils of prehistoric animals, which existed some 46,000 years ago. A few of those fossils are displayed on the tour. It is truly amazing to try and comprehend the enormity of this cave and the fact that it would have once been filled with water from a subterranean spring. The water levels in the cave have receded significantly over the years causing the cave to become the subject of research into how global warming may have impacted the rainfall in this part of WA. The gigantic stalagmites and stalagtites are pretty stunning as is the colourful shawl features where the slow dripping water has calcified into a curtain. Pretty amazing stuff.
