Two sleep-deprived parents, a 5-year-old boy, and a 16-month-old boy arrived at Gnarabar after 2pm on a cold, winter Sunday, looking for a late lunch. I was expecting to be turned away due to the combination of late arrival and off season. The friendly staff did not blink an eye, and showed us to a table. We ordered several smaller dishes to share, a couple of glasses of wine, and a kid's meal for the 5yo. (We'd checked the menu online earlier: Gnarabar has the best kid's menu we found around Margaret River.) The person who took our order (relying on memory, which always impresses me) also took in her stride some banter about the picture she had brought our 5yo to colour in, with no hint of too-cool-for-this. The order arrived quickly. My favourite was the pulled pork slider with fennel slaw and chutney. Seriously tasty winter comfort food. I suspect someone in the kitchen was enjoying themselves as much as we were. We left with takeaway coffees for the trip to the next playground ("Kate" the railway engine). A resoundingly positive experience. Friendly, relaxed yet efficient service; unexpectedly good food.
