“A real trip to the maldives”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2013

We spend two weeks in the Maldives

Unlike most travelers we didn't run to a resort and we tried to see the country a little bit.
The Maldives is a most unique country. with over 200 very small and very flats islands, interesting people and amazing beach it is worth much more then just a resort. We spend a few nights in Local Island like mafushi and a few night in a resort and we recommend to do the same-

Don't miss the local islands small inns -
1.you can get there in a local ferry and enjoy the ride there un like the closed speed boats that you can burly see anything.
2. You can meet the local people and some of the workers and have a real conversation with them UNlike in the resorts
3. You can do some trips like – snorkeling, diving, go see dolphins or manta rays or our favorite - visit sand banks in reasonable prices. Just for an example- go to sand bank with sting ray cost 30 Usd for a couple and from our resort 240 USD.
4. You can see how people really live.
5. You can make your trip longer in the same price.

We stayed in two local islands and mafushi was better for us. In mafushi we stayed just in sting ray and it was perfect-

The staff there is great and you can speak with them about everything especially the manager
Ibrahim which know a lot about the country and he is a really interesting man.

The rooms are a little too small but very comfortable and clean

It less than a min walk from the beach

Recommended for everybody,
If i will go to the Maldives again and can't stay in both a local island and a resort i will happely choose the local island.

We were a group of 8 booked for 3 days with a tour and then extended for another 3 days. If you want 4/5 * resort don't come here. If you want to learn about the island and mix with the locals then do come here. The prices of trips, food and drinks is very reasonable although service can be a bit slow and the food may not come piping hot due the local culture of eating with the hands. Ibrahim is an extremely good host of this establishment and certainly looks after the guests needs. The crew supplied for the snorkelling trips were very good and this area has some of the best dive and snorkelling sites. The rooms are clean and beds comfortable and plenty of hot water and places to hang wet bathers outside. It is a small establishment and they provide hammocks, spa and tables in the courtyard. would come back

Quite Rooms - Location is perfect.
Rooms are Clean - With fresh towels everyday - Availability of Hot Water showers -
Food is good - for Vegetarians less choice
Not very expensive compared to other resorts in Maldives.
Internet connectivity is available in the hotel but within the rooms no WiFi. This can be improved.Due to the tropical climate of the region you may expect small insects inside the rooms. Take your own toiletries.
Helpful Staff - Main appreciation to Mr. Ibrahim & his team.
Thanks Ibrahim & team.

We arrived on Maafushi and was meant by Ibrahim the owner and general manger of Stingray, Beach Inn Along the way he n explained a little about the Island informing us it was 200 meters wide and 1.5"k;s Long. Once we got the Inn we were met with the traditional welcome drink, after shown to our rooms which were great as good as you would get any were, plenty of room and good hot showers.
Food well it was amazing for such a small island who as everything brought in by boat, I can honestly say not one bad meal. I would recommend the local breakfast even though you can get western style. The other thing about this its not expensive to stay or eat, which is a fair cry from the resort islands , which I think a over rated and defiantly over priced. if you want peace and quite and a very helpful man in Ibrahim, who will tell you about all the different trips you can do, I do not snorkel or do much water sort but I will go back. My and some of the friends did and swam with the mantra rays along with thousand of fish. Well done Maafushi

Holidaying in Maldives could hurt your pocket, with so many types of additional costs and taxes. Maafushi island however is the best one can get in a budget. I booked this place for my Maldives holidays based on the rave reviews on Tripadvisor and all the appreciation I have read about the host Ibrahim.

Well, my stay was better than expected. This place is a gem compared to what we pay and what we get. Great value for money. There are few restrictions though, because Maafushi is a local island but the day trip to other islands can make up for that. If drinking beer all day on the beach is your idea of vacation then Maafushi is not a place for you, but if you are looking for a peaceful stay by the clear blue sea, away from regular city life, then this is the place to be. The restriction also extend to women’s clothing. The locals have created a fence around the beach for tourists and one can wear bikini in that area however covering up is required when you roam around in any other part of the island.

When I visited this island, weather was not doing well, as a result the ferry service was on hold, Ibrahim conveniently arranged for our pick up from Male at a very affordable price. The hospitality continued for our entire stay and I would like to thank him again for that.

Stingray is a cute little guesthouse near the beach, the dining area and the passage is quite small but it is enough for the capacity of this place. The rooms are big and equipped with storage cupboard, umbrella, towels, kettle and a TV. It is better to carry your toiletries though. Fins and masks are available at the reception at all times to use for free. Food is good, but vegetarians might struggle a bit (holds true for entire country!), they also have a nice variety of juices and nonalcoholic beverages. At one of the nights we also had a live folk dance performance. The performers were very friendly and the performance was entertaining.
They also have a Jacuzzi in the common area, you are free to use it but there is no privacy to this service, they also have few hammocks, fuss ball and books available to borrow.

For those who like to stay beach side, on the map this place might appear in the central part of the island, but in reality it is just next to the beach. Maafushi is so small that you can walk from one end to another in 10 mins, hence every place is close to the beach.

There are some ten-fifteen options available to explore as day trips, one can go for snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, visit other resort islands etc. one can choose based on their interests and willingness to spend. There is some disparity in services and behavior of the staff when you visit other resorts as day trips, I read about it before and the same was observed when I was at one of the resort. While you do not have to interact with anybody from the staff majority of the time, but the disparity is visible in the dining area where the waiters do not attend to outsiders as they would do to their in house guests. A lot of this also appear rude because the staff is not fluent in English, they fail in expression. You can either take it with a pinch of salt or ask them to behave properly, after all tourist go there for fun and if the resort management do not like it, they should stop that facility. Visit to these resorts are still recommended because Maldivian holiday is incomplete without getting to experience the water villas and the reef rich beaches.
Coming back to Stingray, in all, I had a lovely stay and would recommend my fellow budget travelers to give it a try.

The only thing that can improve in this place is the double bed. The sleep quality is good but their double beds are made of combining two single beds as a result couples might have some issues or if you displace while sleeping, you may find yourself in a pod between the two beds! I think they have kept this as an option due to limited number of rooms but that’s my suggestion on improvement.

Room Tip: Do keep a day for visiting resort island

For us Stingray Beach Inn was the best option in Maafushi. There´s nothing bad with this hotel.
The rooms are very nice and the equipment are new. The rooms are cleaned every day, they change the towels every day also.
In the courtyard you can relax yourselves. They have a jacuzzi, but we didnt use it. You cha use the snorkeling gear for free. The beach is close, just 100 meters.
Food was good!
We make 2 excursions with them, Fihalhohi Resort with a nice reef for snorkeling, just 30 minutes from Maafushi, and the sand banks, just 10 minutes away. Both highly recommended.
The best of the best of this hotel is his Manager, Ibrahim!, Ibrahim is the best! He made our stay very pleasant, he is very helpful and a very nice guy!
Value for money!

I stayed there for 2 nights. Rooms are clean, but don't be surprise if you found some bugs on bed at night.
Staff are friendly, especially the owner.
Maldivian breakfast serving coconut mixed tuna to eat with chapatti/roti romali.
They do provide boat to other islands. But be prepared, an airport drop may cost you 150 US dollars! The best is to get other travellers to share with, so to travel to other island is roughly cost 20-30 dollars/person.
