“Base sucks”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2012

I found that base was not a welcoming hostel. Some of the staff are rude in fact it was just one. The hostel itself is party orientated which some backpackers are thrilled about but i feel they did not cater for all types of travellers!!! The kitchen is ajoining the tv area which was awful because you couldnt hear the tv with the noise of people cooking and talking while having dinner. The room which i stayed in was smelly from the unclean carpet!!! You cant spend a lazy day in the hostel just relaxing beacuse everone is in your face, there is no quiet area! The tv area closes at 12midnight so if your not up for drinking you just have to go to your room and listen to the blar or the music from downstairs. Althought the hostel is pretty morden, i fell that it was not worth the money to stay in!!!! And our air con broke the 2nd night we were there and no-one came to fix it... we were there for a week!!!!!!!!!

Pulling up to this hostel, I was appalled when the taxi driver stopped and told us we had arrived at our accommodation. The curb appeal was disgusting and it was super sketchy, when walking into the main lobby, the floor was sticky from all of the beer that was spilled on the floor. The staff member working behind the desk, was intoxicated and took forever when pulling up our information. We were traveling in a group of six, and one of us was put in a room alone, when we requested MULTIPLE times to be together. There wasn't even a spare bed in our room....When we arrived to our room, it was a mess. Some of our beds weren't made, and the room and bathroom just weren't clean. The bar downstairs was extremely dirty, sticky, and loud, and all of our walls were shaking until about 4am when the bar closed.

Extremely terrible experience, the people were rude, the location was sketchy, and our transportation we booked through the hostel never showed up, and we were unable to get a refund.

I stayed in the Female only section in my own en suite double room which was small but very clean and great to crash down in. The staff and info desks were extremely helpful and the free daily activities and bbq's were great.
Only negatives were that the windows were not sound proofed enough for jetlagged or post party people to sleep (hence the supplied earplugs were used!) and the air con switched itself on when it liked too.
The window didnt open enough either.
On the whole though I would stay here again for sure.

Room Tip: For Female Solo Travellers make sure you book the Female only section of the hostel.

Stayed in the girls dorms for a number of nights.honestly like a lot of hostels in aus the place is a bit overpriced.the room was average sized but staying with people who lived there and had so much stuff made it tiny.the room while it was cleaned never seemed to be fully cleaned.the common areas though we're not 2 bad the kitchen was clean and well stocked of stuff. The bar did put on some good drinks promotions and was easy to meet people if u got involved.locals even show up on a Thursday.the location is good a 10/15 min walk from the bars of fitzroy st and a 3 min walk from Ackland street.you do feel you are paying for everything no free tea/coffee Internet or bag storage which costs you $5 for a few hours in a tiny locker.overall would prob stay here again but only if the hostel down the road was not available

If you happen to be a booze obsessed 19 year old called Simon/Brad/Vince/Warren/Grant who loves smelly crowded rooms with filthy floors, dirty walls, weird aromas, and screaming and shouting from the street at 4am from fellow 19 year old drunks, then this is the place for you. Stereotypically Australian with alcohol and bungee jumping as its mind-set. Some staff are great, others couldn't care less. Avoid unless the above criteria appeals to you.

Very nice hostel. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. Booked a room the the Sanctuary (a part of the hostel for girls only) and found the room very clean and the beds very comfy. We had a very spacious ensuite bathroom and plenty of storage space. They bring you cups of tea/coffee in bed in the morning if you ask the night before! Excellent service! The kitchen is in the basement so has no windows and is a little dark but the eating area is nice with large comfy sofas and a decent sized TV. Staff are very friendly and a help desk is available for anyone looking to book excursions. Location is central and a stones throw from the beach. Once a week they have a dance night where glasses of champagne are free for ladies. Excellent hostel and well worth the money.

Room Tip: The Sanctuary rooms are excellent and a free tea/coffee service is available in the morning for thos...

Stayed in a sanctuary room, with an en-suite bathroom. The room was very spacious and clean. There are large lockable draws under the beds so you can store your stuff safely without having to pay the ridiculous price for a locker, only thing is you need your own padlock. Its in a great location by the beach and most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. When we were there the kitchen was being referbished so they provided all guest with breakfast and dinner. They also let you check in at anytime which is good if you've just got off a long flight.

Room Tip: Females can get sanctuary rooms, with a complimentary towel, shampoo etc and can use hair straightne...
