The Fountain Terrace was our first accomodation in Oz (and one of the best), also the starting point of our Australia Trip. It is in a nice and safe suburban neighbourhood, close to the St.Kilda Beach and to Fitzroy street with good restaurants and a nice atmosphere; Melbourne CBD is easily reachable by tram. The house itself is beautiful, very clean and absolutely well-tended by its very friendly owners Penny & Heikki. Definitely recommendable!

This is a unique bed and breakfast situated in the suburb of St Kilda,Melbourne.
The house, just 2 blocks from the sea front was converted by the owners several years ago into a boutique B & B. It has 7 rooms available, all uniquely named and furnished and a common room used during the day for reading and each morning converted into a communal dining room where you are served a delicious breakfast.

  • Liked — Friendly owners, very concerned that we were comfortable
  • Disliked — Only one chair in the bedroom

Our experience at Fountain Terrace (FT) was nothing short of AMAZING. In fact, the word "amazing" is probably an understatement when describing how we feel about FT.

The owners, Penny, Heikki and Dennis the dog, are extremely warm, friendly and very chatty. They simply cannot do enough to ensure that your stay and visit to Australia is enjoyable and memorable.

The rooms are clean, very comfortable, beautifully decorated and fairly quiet (depending on which room you are staying, there might be a little bit of traffic noise but absolutely nothing that will keep you awake at night!). In fact, the entire premises is decorated with a lot of care and thought. Breakfast is always delicious (anyone staying at FT must try Heikki's omelette and scrambled eggs).

FT itself is very centrally located. It is in the heart of St. Kilda and it provides great access to all the local restaurants, bar and St. Kilda beach.

To put it simply: unless work requires you to stay in the CBD/business district, you would be a fool not to give FT a go. Once you have experienced Penny, Heiki and Dennis' hospitality, you would not want to go anywhere else.

  • Liked — The owners, the location and the premises itself
  • Disliked — Nothing

Recently spent Easter in Melbourne and found Fountain Terrace to be the ideal place for a short getaway. Penny and Heikki (and Dennis!) are wonderful people who go out of their way to really make the trip that much more special, far better than your run-of-the-mill hotel staff.

Brekkie every morning was lovely, wake up to some warm chatter with Penny while the coffee here is fantastic, Heikki makes scrumptious scrambled eggs, and don't forget his special black pudding (DIVINE!!!).

Rooms were tastefully decorated, we stayed in the Norman Lindsay room (queen rm with ensuite) which was cosy but ideal for us as we spent most days trekking Melbourne. Queen rooms here come with a shower ensuite, book the larger rooms if you're after a bit more R&R.

Penny and Heikki also provided us with complimentary passes for the length of our stay to nearby St Kilda Sea Baths, which has an indoor 25m saltwater pool, spas, steamroom and gym as well as fitness classes, which is perfect for the gym junkie/fitness fanatic. Fantastic bonus.

Melbourne CBD is conveniently located 15min away by tram, and nearby are heaps of restaurants and some fantastic cake shops (Acland St) located in the nearby Fitzroy and Acland Sts.

If you're after a boutique hotel with just that bit more, then this is the place to be. Great Memories! Thanks guys!

  • Liked — The fantastic coffee, complimentary pass to St Kilda Sea Baths, great brekkie, Dennis the dog

We spent 4 wonderful nights at Fountain Terrace in February. The location, while out of town, is an easy 15 minute tram ride away from central Melbourne, being located in the buzzing beach resort of St Kilda. Penny and Heikki are fabulous hosts, and breakfast was something to look forward to each morning.

The rooms are beautifully decorated, and were extremely quiet. The house is a wonderful Victorian property with some fantastic features, which has been lovingly restored by Heikki and Penny.

Service at the hotel was discrete yet efficient, with recommendations on where to go and what to do if you needed it.

All in all a memorable stay, at a wonderful boutique hotel in an interesting and vibrant city. We will be back.

  • Liked — The hosts, who were fantastic. Period architecture lovingly restored. Great breakfasts.
  • Disliked — Internet access would have helped. No pool or leisure facilities.

Great friendly homely place to stay - guests couldn't be made more welcome and the attention to detail in the rooms was great even down to a selction of CDs! Very gracious host and hostess and Heikki cooks a wonderful mushroom on toast breakfast!
The only slight downside for me being a single female traveller was the position of what must be a 'halfway house' at the bottom of their road which wasn't pleasant to have to walk past as there were often a couple of guys hanging around who would make comments. Don't let that put you off though!

  • Liked — Homeliness and friendliness
  • Disliked — Halfway house close by

I cannot add much more to what other reviewers have already said about Fountain Terrace-everything written here is true. This B&B is more of a boutique hotel, with 7 rooms. We stayed here for 2 nights in January to attend the tennis, and loved every minute of it. The location is first rate-close to the beach, tram and restaurants. Previously we have stayed in the city which is fine, but not so great if you're arriving on a Sunday, not much is open in the city. In contrast, St Kilda on a Sunday is buzzing, particularly if you happen to arrive on the Sunday of the gay lesbian parade as we did. The B&B is on a quiet street away from the action, but there is plenty of activity (and a 24 hour Coles supermarket) within walking distance. Restaurants in Fitzroy St -Street Cafe has very good, reasonably priced food. Also enjoyed the Malaysian restaurant around the corner on Ackland St. Too many places to choose from! There are also restaurants right on the beachfront -although we didn't go, the St Kilda Baths restaurants were in a nice setting. Penny and Heikki are wonderful hosts and we'll be back next January I hope.
