I flew in Melbourne at 9 am and was at hotel by 1030 am. Room (a petite double) was not ready but told me to come back at noon. The front desk stored my luggage and I went off into St Kilda.

Came back at noon and my room was ready. I want to say I had room 201. It did not face the road and my window look out to the parking lot and, presumely, someone's home on the next street.

I booked the small roomest they have. I was not luxury or size (Novotel is up the road). I wanted comfort, cable TV and a ensuite room. I got all three. The bed was comfortable, you have a small flat screen TV mounted to the wall, some closet space (I just had one piece of luggage so I just put it in the corner), a small fridge (I would just put soda/water in it) and a small but adequate bathroom with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Towels were decent and plenty of hot water. You are given a second keycard for electricity (you insert it in some wall slot holder and it turns the power on).

It's not the Ritz and they pretend not to be. I did not have a noise problem (except for the thunderstorm one night) and did not have a problem with the size of the room. I got a $85 AUD rate for 3 nites. Another big bonus for me, a washer and dryer on site! They have a restaurant but I ate either in Melbourne or St Kilda. Tram was very convenient and I took a bus from the airport that stops directly at the hotel.

Booked midweek special in a deluxe room for myself and daughter, room was clean and everything worked, bed very comfortable, but still didn't sleep for 2 nights because of night club across the road, all patrons congregated outside the club, right across from our room, very noisy...just getting to sleep, then the trams started! Have stayed in a few places in St Kilda and most are noisy if you want to stay near Acland or Fitzroy Streets, sometimes it's worth staying a bit further away to get some sleep!

“OK Hotel - BAD location”

The hotel itself is actually quite nice. The staff were courteous and helpful, and the room was clean and comfortable. Broadband internet access is available in-room at a pretty reasonable rate by australian standards. Now the bad: The rooms are small. If you dont need a lot of space, no problem, but I like to relax in a chair or couch after a long day, and you could not fit one in the room if you tried. Its basically a 12 x 12 room with a bathroom attached. The neighborhood is poor. Graffiti is everywhere. Windows have bars. Alleys smell like urine. There are tram tracks right in front of it. Every 15 minutes a trolley goes by that sounds like a train. And finally, the worst thing of all - there is a night club right across the street. From 9pm to 4am all you will hear is drunk teens and college kids yelling, swearing, screaming, fighting, breaking bottles, singing, taxis beeping horns, etc. There are also apartments right across the street, which seem to be the (temporary?) homes of some of the night club patrons. After they get home, they like to sit on their balconies and sing, scream, yell, fight, etc. If you like to sleep, this is not the place for you.

“Interesting Hotel in Good Location”

A 3 day stop over in Melbourne was spent at the Cosmopolitan in Melbour St Kilda. On arrival I thought uh-oh bad choice but, its nicer on the inside than out!

Checki n was quick and easy in a large recpetion area. Our cosmo delux rooms was in the same block of the hotel (B block) and consisted of a large(ish) room with walk in shower. A nice desk ran the length of one wall and a wall mounted LCD tv provided entertainment. The room was clean and tidy and had everyhting we needed. A nice touch was all the guides to the local area.

Other facilities included a restaunrant, internet pc, and a small laundry.

Location was central to St Kilda beach and the hotel is close to a tram stop, and indeed trams pass right outside (between 6am and midnight) and cause some noise. journey from Melbourne central was about 30-35mintues.

“Bed bugs!!! Beware!!!”

Cosmopolitan Hotel Melbourne

Jan 23, 2008

I stayed at this hotel on NYE. The rooms are tiny and cramped, but that was ok. But, when I left the next day, I found that I had more than 60 BED BUG bites, mostly on my shoulders and back. I didn't know what they were but I was pretty freaked out! I work at a hospital, so when I went back to work the nurses were so horrified at how bad the bites looked (I also had massive bites on my face and neck which were very visible - and extremely embarrassing) that one of them rang the hotel to inform them that I definitely had bed bug bites. Apparently the hotel needed me to ring them, which I did - the manager basically told me that they didn't find any bed bugs and pretty much dismissed me as a liar - what great service! I was so worried about the bites that I went to see my doctor, who confirmed that they were, in actual fact, bed bug bites (if you're not sure check out the website:http://medent.usyd.edu.au/bedbug/). Don't stay at this hotel -they obviously don't care about their customers and their service is not what you would expect from a 4.5 star hotel.

    • Disliked — Bed bugs! Terrible service, terrible follow-up on complaint - especially not calling me when they had our contact details from the booking!

Management Response
CosmopolitanMgt, Manager
(Management representative)

The Cosmopolitan Hotel will always take complaints of this nature very seriously and is disappointed that you feel the action taken by the hotel was not sufficient. After receiving a phone call from your colleague, three days after your stay, the hotel immediately contacted our pest control company to thoroughly check the room you occupied for visible signs of bed bugs. This was completed on the same day the phone call was received.

The investigation concluded that there was no evidence of bed bugs within the room. This information was relayed back to your colleague who was satisfied with this outcome. The following day your colleague again contacted the hotel stating you still believed that you had been bitten by bed bugs. During this discussion it was determined that the bites did not present themselves for almost 24+ hours after your stay. It is commonly held fact that bites from bed bugs will be noticeable immediately.

Given that the bites were not noticeable immediately and that subsequent guests occupying the same room did not claim to have been bitten the hotel believes it acted in the most friendly and efficient manner. It is unfortunate an event which is unsubstantiated has tainted your opinion of the hotel. It is important to also note that the Cosmopolitan Hotel has a variety of different room types ranging from the Cosmo Petite Room, which you occupied, through to large and spacious Grand 2 Bedroom Apartments. The price paid for each room type is in line with its respective size.
