“Old fashioned but spotlessly clean and very friendly.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2012 via mobile

We stayed here for just one night and loved it. Some of the reviews on here are very unfair! Sure, it's not the Hilton but it's spotlessly clean and extremely good value. We ate dinner at the restaurant and it was fabulous. Great food, great value.

Overall, highly recommended.

We stayed for two nights in one of the family studios.

To start the reception area had a foul smell. The receptionist was rude and unfriendly. She didn't fill our details in correctly so after the first night our keycards expired and we couldn't get back into our room. The towel service (from the same problem) was only set for the one night. Special note, the towel lady was friendly, helpful and efficient, if the workers were more like her Mid City would be a better hotel.

When we tried to fix this issue of the keycard etc. with reception they were helpful, and gave us a free breakfast, which was nice.
The next morning, however, they told us no we wouldn't be getting free breakfast, the lady before hadn't written it down anywhere.
By this point we were over it. And had decided to forget the breakfast, but the receptionist was helpful in she called management and after a long conversation she told us that breakfast was fine. No sorry's were ever mentioned.

The breakfast was average, it's a hot and cold selection. The waitress was absent almost the entire time we were there, she was the only worker that I could see, so we were left to fend for ourselves.

The room itself was not bad, the beds were decent, the fridge was set too high (so that it froze our milk etc.), after a little fighting with it the toilet did work, eventually. Overall easily fixed issues. On top of everything else it just reminded us of the things that had gone wrong at Mid City already.

I'm sorry to say we were thoroughly convinced upon leaving that we would never be back.

Ballarat is such a beautiful city and if you want to enjoy it don't stay at the Mid City. Room was dark and antiquated, bed rolled to middle, knob fell off clock, never have I seen an iron as old as the one supplied, but worse of all was the dreadful noise apparently from the hot water service which kept us awake all night.

When complaint was made at reception about the noise they were obviously aware of it but offered no apology.

Could not put up with it for the second night. To top it off had no hot water in the morning.

Breakfast in the restaurant was also of poor quality.

For a one night stay the rooms are comfortable and our unit had a separate bedroom which was good. The rooms though are dated and in need of a good renovation. Bathroom is adequate although only one of us had a hot shower in the morning before the water ran out.
Staff were friendly and helpful and the included breakfast was mostly good. The hot food was well over cooked.
Location is excellent for shops and restaurants and noise was minimal despite being right near a main road.
It is surprising it is rated as a 4 star motel. A good two to three star value seems more realistic.

Two night weekend stay in Ballarat for a local beer festival. Mid City Hotel is a classic basic motel complex with not much to offer other than a good, accessible location in central Ballarat, which is easy walking distance from the main city centre shopping and dining district. The room was small and suck in 1960s/70s fashion. The bed wasn't too comfortable and the services were very limited. The TV reception in our room was terrible. We didn't have any problems during our stay there, but had hoped for a little more given the price paid. It would be ok it you just need a place to crash for the night.

Room Tip: A ground level room is always better in a motel complex like this.

Good room size, average fittings, poor sound insulation. This is definitely not a 4 star motel.
There was some confusion over our booking - they had us down for the following night but the paperwork from lastminute.com had the correct date. Thankfully I had the paperwork with me. On departure they mistakenly looked up the room next door and tried to charge for 2 nights and breakfast!

This is your standard ordinary motel. The rooms are fairly clean, but rather dark with old furnishings. Good-sized parking area, if that is a consideration. Breakfast was adequate, and hotel staff service was ok. Nothing exceptional; a 2-star property.

Location though is excellent if you want to be near shops and restaurants. Even when our conference adjourned late, there would always be an open place to eat within walking distance, which is an advantage in smaller Aussie towns. It is this average motel's location which is its redeeming feature.
