“Fabulous Stay at the Sebel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2007

From when we got there to when we left this hotel was outstanding. The friendly and efficient front desk people, the friendly wait staff and ever better room service make this one of the best stays we have had. We stayed for only 2 nights but it was very relaxing and in an excellent location. Parking was included which was a bonus. We had a lovely one bedroom deluxe suite which had excellent amenities. The gym was compact with a few machines but everything worked and there was a TV in there so you could pass the time whilst on the machines. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone who wants a quality stay in Launceston.

We were only at the Sebel Launceston for one night however we were very happy with our choice of hotel. The rooms were modern, well decorated and comfortable. The only gripe we had was that we were on the first floor facing the road and there was a substantial amount of noise (traffic etc). There is an underground car park which you can use at the cost of $5 per day. We would stay at the Sebel again.

The Sebel Hotel offers some of the very best accommodation in Tasmania. The hotel is stylish without being overwhelming. The rooms are spacious, tasteful and immaculately clean with many thoughtful extra touches. The food in the hotel is of a very good standard too for those who do not wish to venture further. The staff were delightful. Everyone was helpful, cheerful, enthusiastic and positive which helps towards a really relaxing, comfortable stay. The hotel's location is central and yet it is quiet. On site parking is another bonus. As is the free laundry facility. The hotel has some beautiful art work on display in the public areas

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2007

I stayed here for 2 nights in January with my wife and 2 wee ones - aged 4 and 6. Despite it being peak season the Sebel was almost empty. We booked a 2 bedroom suite 2 weeks in advance at the cost of $310 per night. We had a bedroom with queen sized bed and an ensuite bathroom/toilet with a huge spa bath. The suite had a large living area with a (very very small) dining table, couch, 2 chairs, sink, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge, freezer, tv, dvd and video player. There was also a wee balcony off this living area.

There was a separate room with 2 single beds, toilet, separate shower and a laundry room - washing machine and dishwasher.

Good points - the place looked brand new. Carpets, decor etc was immaculate and tasteful. There was a small gym and spa area. The rooms were well laid out and decorated. Spacious and comfortable. We were impressed - as were the kids. The large spa bath was terrific. They also had a car park with quick access to reception and the lifts.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We didn't use room service or the restaurant.

Shops, bars, cafes and restaurants were a very short walk away.

Bad points - perhaps the following points are nitpicking somewhat but...

We were disappointed to be charged $5 a night to park the car. especially when we found that the inroom info stated that parking is complimentary.

We were charged $1 dollar (and had to go to Reception) for 2 tiny sachets of washing powder. For $310 a night surely it's not too much to include a couple of complimentary sachets ? They supplied plenty of free tea bags, coffee and sugar sachets and biscuits but not powder for the washing machine ! A little petty.

We were in a corner room on the 2nd floor. The noise from the traffic below was extremely noisy from time to time. Sleeping past 7.30am on the Monday morning was impossible.

We were also surprised to be able to hear the muffled conversation from the room next door. First time in years that I've been staying in hotels that I could actually hear the people next door. Given that the hotel was very very quiet we were a little disappointed that they did not choose a quieter location.

We would certainly return here but would need a room away from the street and higher up - with assurances that there is little noise.

Arrived late at night after traveling from the US and was given a room on the second floor overlooking the trash cans of the building next door. Wasn't real pleased when we found out the hard way that the trash cans are emptied at 5:30am every morning by an outfit that doesn't seem to care how much noise they make. Also, the computer business on the second floor of the building next door was so close to our balcony and bedroom window that there was no privacy at all if the curtains were open.

A disastrous stay was averted when we requested and was granted a different room on the other side of the hotel. The hotel staff was very nice about the whole issue and I came away with the impression that they get this type of request quite often which made me also wonder why they stuck us with the room to begin with.

On the plus side, the rooms were clean and tidy, the air conditioning was very good considering there's not much of it to begin with in Tasmania and what's there is rarely sufficient to ward off hot days like we experienced during our visit. The staff is friendly and helpful and the restaurant serves up a good breakfast and dinner and the location is right close to downtown and major highways.

All things considered, we will definitely stay there again as long as we don't get one of the trash can view rooms.
