“A good experience in rather gloomy town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2010

Our visit to Launceston was only made memorable by this hotel.

Launceston itself had little to satisy us.

The Sebel was a welcome oasis to return to nightly. Modern with a balcony, albeit facing a busy road, appropriate furnishings and decor and a good sized bathroom.

The restaurant was quite good.

Service was the archilies heel of the hotel as staff were quite condenscending.

We would recommend overall.

Our two nights stay were great , I am a very light sleeper and was very happy to say we did not hear any bell from the town halls clock. The room was clean ,towels changed daily and the staff were pleasant and helpful, the location gave us great access to shopping and dinning out.

We stayed at The Sebel for just one night, in the three bedroom loft apartment; myself, husband and three children. The apartment was quite nice, modern, but the living area was smaller than I had expected. I would have expected a three bedroom apartment (sleeps 6), to have a dining table and lounge area with more than four chairs!
The views across the rooftops towards the hills were very nice from both sides of the apartment. The linen and towels were clean and crisp.
The highlight was the friendly staff, those we encountered were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
A couple of negatives - the blinds are very thin, so the bedrooms are quite light from the street lights outside and from the sunrise in the morning. The bells from the clock tower disturbed us through the night, but of course this is not the hotel's fault! The receptionist told us that many of the local hotels are banding together and hopefully they will soon be able to stop the bells ringing through the night. The only other negative was that we put our room service breakfast menu on our door in the evening (as instructed), but it was still hanging there in the morning when our breakfast should have arrived. Still, a quick phone call to reception and this was rectified quickly and our breakfast arrived in about twenty minutes.
Overall, this hotel is not anything spectacular, but it is comfortable, clean, friendly and in a good location. The parking was also very convenient and not too expensive at $8. Would stay here again when in Launceston.

First impression is that of a modern, well designed apartment hotel. But that doesn't last. While the hotel is clean and tidy and is located well in the Launceston CBD, it is without any doubt the nosiest hotel I've ever stayed in. The walls are paper thin, to the point where you can hear people talking in the adjacent rooms - you can even hear them closing the blinds at night. The carpark is located directly under the hotel and the vehicle noise constantly invades the room. Don't expect a quiet night's rest.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment with a "kitchenette". It's obvious that lots of effort has gone into the look of the room but very little thought has gone into the functionality - the fridge door opens the opposite way to the cupboard door it's behind making access difficult, the luggage shelf is in the opposite corner to the bed, the toilet has no fan to get rid of lingering odors, the only full length mirror in on the inside of the toilet door (who wants to look at themselves when sitting there) and the toilet door needs to be open to use the mirror (remember the lingering odors), the lifts are the smallest I've ever seen in a hotel (one person and a luggage trolley and the lift is full).

Despite being on top of a car park there's limited on-site parking with only about 20 bays for the entire hotel and you can't reserve a bay when booking (best effort only).

As for price, we stayed at the Old Woolstore in Hobart prior to this hotel and the Old Woolstore was cheeper, had larger rooms, better kitchen facilities, included laundry facilities in the room, was much quieter and had better car parking available. We booked at the Sebel using a "special" rate for a 2-night stay and the Sebel was still more expensive. Not value for money.

I won't be coming back and I don't recommend this to anyone who enjoys a quiet nights rest.

Great great great bed & pillows, clean, quiet, friendly staff even at 4am when we got back to there after being out with friends. Our room was very quiet though during the day you could hear the room conjoining us as our room must have been one you could make into a two bedroom appartment.
Our room was at the back of the building unfortunatly overlooking a roof but still had a view to trevallyn area which was ok, but really we wernt there for the view, we stayed because of the cheap price we got & the location. We will stay there again & would reccomend.

The Sebel Hotel in downtown Launceston is a good place to operate from. Across John Street is a gym that does "Body Pump". It's bouncy and fun--even if your in the hotel with windows and balcony doors open.

I had so many complaints about this hotel, that I decided to check out after one night out of 4 booked. It was after a night without any sleep at all. But let me first of all emphasize that the staff were very helpful, friendly and smiling. And here we go:

1. There was no parking space available upon arrival. (They sell parking space to
companies in the neighborhood. That’s why there is lack of places for the guests).
I was told to contact the front desk next day myself.

2. The room was not vacuumed upon arrival. A lot of very long black hair on the carpet.

3. The rooms towards the street are very-very noisy. A lot of street noise. Noise from a
large bell from a building across the street. The bell starts ringing about every
second hour around the entire night. The walls are so thin that you can hear people
in the next room snoring, and what else.

4. The internet connection was supposed to be HIGHSPEED. The download speed
was only 0,6 Mbit, and that is VERY-VERY slow.

5. Not even a small writing pad was in the room.

So, if you expect to get a good night sleep, stay elswere.
