Firstly, if you saw the outside of this place, and the surrounds, you'd be completely put off. Very dated, and to get to most rooms, you need to climb old wooden stairs - not great when it's raining and you're carrying heavy luggage. However, our room was clean, a good size, with modern furniture, and the 'fake Tudor-style' decorating was actually kind of cozy! The motel is in a great position to explore Launceston, albeit on a busy main road.

However, it is my absolute pet hate when motels/hotels have those stupid shower curtains, and no fan in the bathroom. When we took showers (lucky we were only there for one night) the water went absolutely everywhere, and the shower recess was so small, the curtain stuck to me, and I'm guessing those things aren't dry cleaned/sanitised after every guest. Ew. How hard is it to install a glass shower screen?!

If you can get over this, and the outside, then we thought it was value for money and would recommend it.

What a terrible dissapointment this was. We had booked 2 nights at this "luxury" accommodation and were looking forward to exploring Launceston. On check in we were told to drive up the road to the apartments. On entry our feelings started to turn sour. What may have been quaint in the 70's is now just decaying. On entry to our room and saw the delapitated furnishings, rusting surrounds and the noise of renovations down the hall was all just too much. We contacted reception and advised them that the room did not meet our expectations and we were told by most unhelpful staff there was nothing else and if we left we would be charged. Well instead of spending the night awake and frightened about what would crawl over us, we left and left Launceston behind as well. On queries at other hotels we where told that this was a very common response to this accommodation. Unfortunately it was a big AFL football match that weekend and the rest of Lauceston was booked out so it really spoilt our plans completely.

This hotel was clean and room had new furniture/linen. However, the outside of the hotel would probably turn a lot of people away. It really does need an update, as the old-style dark beams and white paint does look very dated. We went to eat at the restaurant/pub one night, but left after having just a drink, as the staff seemed uninterested in providing any service and the only menu was a chalk board in the corner of the room. I liked that shampoo, conditioner and body wash was provided in pump bottles in the shower, but hated the shower curtain! I think that they can be quite unhygenic in a hotel. The water also sprayed onto the bathroom floor whenever I had a shower, which was annoying. I found the reception staff to be friendly and was pleased to have free car parking. However, we had some rather loud guests staying near us (on 1st floor), who stood out on the balcony and talked/yelled during the night. I'm sure some staff must've heard this, but no-one came to ask them to be quiet. This is a good hotel for a couple of nights, and the attempt to make the room look a bit more updated has been well done.

I note there appears to be some divergence in opinions of this place. I chose it for its location - right by the walking entrance to the Cataract Gorge and opposite a brilliant restaurant (one of the best in Tasmania they say).

But the motel is dreadful, simply dreadful. Built back in the 70s, it is in desperate need of refurbishment. The place looks dirty - horribly stained carpet and walls, and I found a half-full packet of crisps under a coffee table (not ours!) when WE were cleaning up the morning we gladly left. There were broken tiles when we walked in, and a painting was lying on the floor. It was a nightmare. They couldn't find the key to our apartment when we arrived - I which they hadn't. The staff was surly, and a dumpster full of garbage lay in the car park the whole time we were there. Its just about the worst place I have ever stayed in Australia, and - given its premier position, an embarrassment to Launceston (a nice town).

We spent 2 nights here late December '08 and loved it. The complex was completely charming and our room was modern and spotlessly clean, with everything we needed for our stay. There were even pumps on the wall of the shower with complimentary shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Room serviced every day, beds clean and comfortable.

Only complaint would be the coffee in the pub/restuarant (worst ever tasted) and the fact that the sweet shop onsite was closed. Why close something like that in peak tourist time?? Otherwise we were 100% happy and would highly recommend this place to anyone staying in Launceston. Very good location too, with easy walk to the Gorge and shops & restaurants.
