“Crisp and Modern!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2014

I remember the Hotel Charles as the old Launceston General Hospital, so was curious to see what reminders were left in the new hotel. There is virtually nothing and the colour scheme and overall look is very modern. Parking could become tricky when the hotel is full but we did not have an issue. The rooms are the ex wards but again the look is extremely up to date. The inhouse restaurant has a cosy vibe, and the food is absolutely delicious - especially the desserts. Breakfast can be ordered to the room or can be eaten in the restaurant - there is the option of continental or hot cooked. Short stroll to the city but the walk back up Charles can be a little tiring. This hotel comes highly recommended and we would love to stay again.

I suppose "clinical" is appropriate for this ex-hospital hotel. Rooms are entirely adequate and fit the current trend of "neutral in every respect" at a fairly upmarket price. Nothing to criticise, but nothing to praise either.

Ticks all the boxes, but no wow factor & nothing of interest. It's all been recently refurbished to a good standard.

You could be anywhere - Moscow, Manchester, Manhattan - very boring, bland, in a word "modern".

Food in the restaurant was OK. Front Desk OK. Everything OK.

Room Tip: They're probably all the same

Every month for the past 12 months, I have stayed at the Charles on business. I stay in many properties and the Charles is in my equal top 2.
A great location, great rooms, great value, but best of all is the attitude and friendliness of the staff. In my case the breakfast staff remember my name and get my day started in a positive and friendly manner. Nothing is too much trouble!

We picked this hotel online for location and new look and we were not disappointed. It's a well-done conversion: it used to be a hospital I believe and you can recognize that in the rooms and corridors, which I liked.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
Room and bathroom were spacious and comfortable. We walked all around Launceston and liked the location of the hotel. We dined in the restaurant one evening and enjoyed our meal.
Off-street parking.

We stayed at this hotel for three nights during our trip to Tasmania. We chose the hotel due to glowing reviews on trip advisor. The reality was a little different to what we had expected. The room was very small and there was very little sound insulation so every night we hsd to hear every movement in the hall and in neighbouring rooms. Also we found that the plumbing all shared the same pipes so we heard every toilet flush and shower from the other rooms. On a positive note, it was clean.

Having read a couple of recent negative reviews, I have to say we have found it the complete opposite. It is kept beautifully clean and we found the staff very helpful and attentive.
We travel a lot, and are very particular about the service and facilities provided, especially with the wheelchair access and the accessibility of the bathroom etc. The room is perfect and the king bed very comfortable - the bed even has room underneath for the hoist wheels - if your wheelie needs a hoist to get out of bed (as mine does).
We stayed for 12 nights, and the disabled bathroom is exactly as it should be, and the north east aspect meant that once you opened curtain in the morning, the room (207) was flooded with sunshine (until about 2.00pm) - very nice.
The room is at the back of the hotel and doesn't get the views of town, but the morning sunshine, and green garden outlook, more than made up for the lack of city lights.
While it had a lovely quiet air conditioner, it also had a small balcony with a sliding door which was excellent for breathing the night air. It also had a kitchenette which was great for making our own breakfast with the sourdough bread and other goodies we bought nearby.
It's location is fantastic, as Charles St is the foodie end of town, and as you walk to and from the hotel there is a great selection of Cafes, pubs, etc.
We ate one night in the hotel restaurant and it was also excellent, but there are so many nice ones nearby you probably will only eat there once during your stay.

A nice, fairly new hotel – destroyed by a really bad management attitude.
1 – The obvious ground floor exit from the building, opposite the reception desk, isn’t an exit at all – except in an emergency. But you don’t know that until you have walked the 8 or 10 metres first, before you turn around with some egg on your face – and you see the staff at the desk smirking as if to say “gotcha again”. Nearly everyone does it, we are told. Would be a very simple thing for management to put up a small but noticeable “emergency exit only” sign.
2 – The desk chair in the two rooms that we stayed in is heavy and with a pedestal base bigger than the chair itself – so on not one but two occasions I stubbed my toes badly on the base – almost breaking one toe. I am sure I am not the only one to have done that. These chairs might be very trendy but they are not safe. They should never have been introduced and should have been replaced long ago with normal chairs.
3 – It gets worse. We checked in late in the afternoon (into a front room with a nice view), both of us unwell from some crook yoghurt that we had for breakfast in the previous (Devonport) hotel. After we both unpacked and I came out of the shower, I couldn’t help noticing that the air-conditioning was pouring water directly onto the carpet. A lot of water. So the room was not usable. Now, we understand that something like that can happen – it shouldn’t, but if it’s the first really hot day that they have had for a year then it can. We understand also that the hotel can run at 100% occupancy – it was completely full. (It’s never a really good idea to run anything at 100% capacity for long.) So there was no other room to move to. Eventually they managed to find us another room – by putting one of their regular customers into a room that had been closed – because someone had smoked in it. The room that they offered us was on the back of the hotel, with effectively no view and above the loading dock. The room was not acceptable. But we had no other choice – and both of us were still a bit crook from the yoghurt. What management should have said to us then was that they would try to find us a nice room in one of the other good hotels in town - most of which were also full. What they instead said was, that we were welcome to check out and go to another hotel, but that we would still have to pay them for the two nights accommodation that we had booked. I was just too unwell and too tired to argue – so we stayed. But we wouldn’t be doing that again.
4 – There was no apology whatever for needing to pack up and change rooms shortly after we had checked in and unpacked. Except for a free coffee that they offered us in the lounge, there was also nothing at that time to compensate us for the trouble. Although they did eventually take off the cost of one breakfast, they should have actually knocked off the cost of the room for at least one of the nights that we were there. That would have been reasonable given the circumstances.
5 – It didn’t help that a rubbish truck did a very noisy collection from the loading dock, right below us, at 4:45 in the morning.

Room Tip: If you really must stay there, make sure you get a room with a view and not on the loading dock side
