“Best steak in Aussie and outside NYC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2012

Having lived in the NYC, USA, this place can proudly go toe-to-toe with some of the top NYC steakhouses. Great steaks, sides, appetizers, and deserts. My partner only eats veggies/ fish, her meal was equally superb. The staff could not have been more professional, and their recommendations spot on! The atmosphere in the restaurant warm and cozy. Well done, great last night on which to end our two week tour of Tassie!

“nice place but a bit cramped”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

Have been wanting to try this place for while,Service was excellent,we had a steak each with some delicious side plates of veggies.Steak were cooked as we had asked but not any better flavor than the ones I cook at home .The only negative is the restaurant is a bit cramped and we were sitting so close to the other tables it was slightly uncomfortable.Decor relaxing and nice background music. We definitely prefer Black Cow's sister restaurant Stillwater as the food and service is similar but the restaurant is more open.

“Overrated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012 via mobile

We had four people dining and eventually forked out $400 plus for what was essentially pretty average steak, much better expected. Service ok but nothing amazing. Much better options available.

“Quality food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

We enjoyed a great night out with friends. I had the Eye fillet Longford 200g, plus the truffled bearnaise sauce and for dessert old fashioned creme caramel. All up the steak was fabulous, sauce put it all together, price for main/dessert is what you expect to pay in Sydney with the quality to match! The wine sommelier however wasn't experienced but this is not really a detraction from the overall experience. Short walking distance from Old Colonial!

“Open Tables but No Reservation?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

We came to eat at this restaurant, at about 6pm on a Saturday evening. There were approximately 4 tables with patrons, and about 12 tables sitting empty. We asked if we could be seated, a table for 2, and were told that there was no room, that they were fully booked. We looked around again to make sure we heard correctly, with so many tables empty, surely they could accommodate a 2 person feed... But nope. We were told that they were all booked. So we left, quite disappointed in the service. The place was tidy, with nice decor, and looking at the menu while were waiting for a waitress it did seem that the prices were fairly high. But alas we weren't allowed to sample the food.

Stillwatermanagement, Manager at Black Cow Bistro, responded to this review, November 22, 2012
Hi Shpunky,

To achieve a smooth flow of service and to ensure our high standards are met we cap our bookings at 10 pax per half hour. At 6pm it can seem that the restaurant is not really fully booked, however by 7:30pm our 40 seats are filled as each half an hour time slot goes by.
This ensures guests are not left waiting for meals or service and allows a steady flow for the kitchen, especially as our Chefs have an extremely tiny space to work in.
You may ask why the manager did not allow you to sit down and enjoy a quick meal? We are not in the business of rushing tables and would prefer to allow our diners the freedom of having 1 - 3 courses at their leisure, or to at least allow a 2 hour dining period. To serve you in only an hours time would be rushing both service and the kitchen, and I would imagine a hasty review of the rushed service would then be posted on here. Our 6pm time slot was fully booked when you had arrived as were the rest of the time slots until late in the evening.
We do quite often turn over tables however this is more towards the later part of the evening at 8:30pm/9pm.
I do apologise we could not fit you in and I'm sorry you felt disappointed in the service, however we are ensuring our diners are well looked after in the restaurant, as I'm sure you would understand if you were a patron who had reserved a table and then to get below average service because the manager became a little too over zealous and squeezed in too many patrons. We strongly recommend reservations and for Friday/Saturday evenings booking a week or even two weeks in advance for this time of year is advisable. If you would like to discuss this further please email me at info@blackcowbistro.com.au

Kind regards

Bianca Welsh (Co-owner/Restaurant manager)
