I stayed one night at the Ibis Styles Mt Isa Hotel (04.04.2013), after spending a couple of days in Birdsville (see separate review). Although I can’t give the Ibis Mt Isa a higher grading than 3 out of five, let me point out the positive aspects first.
Initially, I booked for two night but due to a medical emergency, I had to cancel the second night and also needed to arrange luggage storage at very short notice. Top marks for the hotel management for their pragmatic and uncomplicated ways in dealing with both these issues. Because my room could be sold on time (the 2nd night), I was only charged for my first night. At the initial check-in, I was advised that the room rate for the first night would be AUD $205.00 and the second night would be $158.00. In the end, I was invoiced for $191.83 (a continental breakfast was included in the room rate).
The Ibis Styles (formerly the Verona Hotel) has seen better days and would benefit from a general make-over to warrant its current room rates. Its location within the central business district, however, is definitely a plus. The hotel has a lift which is much appreciated. Whilst my rom (#130) was of a good size and clean, it appeared to me, like the rest of the establishment, rather drab and dull. I also noticed a chair which required repairs and reported this to reception by phone and a room maintenance form. The bathroom was clean and had a contemporary feel to it. The bed was comfortable and I heard no excessive street noises. This may be different though with rooms facing Rodeo Drive and Camooweal Street. Room 130 is somewhat tugged away and has no direct street view. The included continental breakfast comprised of the absolute essentials and could be improved (other similar hotels/motels do it better).
In summary: based on my comparison and assessment of the Ibis Styles Mt Isa Hotel with similar establishments in the same hotel chain elsewhere, I was somewhat disappointed. Mt Isa, after all, is not a frontier town anymore, and there are several examples of other hotels/motels in town which offer better quality rooms and services. One example is the Spinifex Motel (see separate review) only a 15-20 minute walk further down Marian Street.
