“Terrific Aussie Hospitality”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2009

We stayed here on our way from Melbourne to the Whitsundays.
Great location. Nice and peaceful right by the river, as most all other
accommodation is on the main drag and very noisy.

Yes, motel is not flash by any means, but we found the rooms clean and the best shower we have had so far along the trip. Water pressure was fabulous and bathroom quite spacious.

The best however were managers Neil and Carol! What great Aussie hospitality.
We were so tired from driving and did not really want to go anywhere for dinner.
They do not have a "restaurant" per say (they just took over management about 4 months ago and are trying to lift the game) but Neil made us a lovely dinner and took the time to set up a lovely table for us by the pool complete with 'flowers' and candles. Food was presented beautifully and was exactly what the "Dr" ordered for these wary travelers.

We stayed at the Mid City Motor Inn for one night at the beginning of a three-week long trip through Queensland. The hotel, in a good location on the edge of the commercial district on the riverwalk, was cheap but provided the necessary amenities. Although the lighting was poor, the furniture mismatched , and the bathroom was in dire need of a deep clean, I would stay here again. You pay for what you get. It was quiet at night and the front desk offered many services from providing bagged lunches to arranging tours.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2009

We walked into our room and first noticed the very odd mix of furniture. Then, we were overcome by the terrible odours. We discovered that the insides of the dresser drawers were incredibly moldy and the musty smell was permeating the entire room, even with the window wide open. It actually was difficult to breathe. To cover up this awful smell, someone had sprayed some revoltingly sweet room "freshener," which made the situation much worse, if that was possible. (I later found the container for this freshener stuck in the closet, and the instructions were for it to be placed in a dispenser of some type, not sprayed around. No wonder the smell was nauseating.) We requested that the spray not be used, and they complied, but the smell from the spray was so bad that it didn't disappear during the four nights/five days of our stay, and of course the smell of the mold continued as well. Then, there was a washer/dryer available, but the dryer was broken, and although they kindly offered to let us use the hotel staff's dryer, that just ate our money and hardly got the clothes dry. Finally, in the very large and fairly attractive courtyard adjoining the pool, there was a big sign that said, "No Smoking." The staff would sit around the table under the sign, smoking like crazy, and then leave the ashtray, filled to overflowing with butts, on the table. What were they thinking - that the guests would clean up their mess? On the positive side, the location was very good, and we really enjoyed our time in the small city of Mackay.
