Quietly tucked away in the bustling town of Surfers Paradise is the secret gem that is Black Coffee Lyrics. Concealing itself from the chaotic tourist filled streets, it ensures its location is kept secret under the camouflage of a shabby alleyway that is not particularly inviting to the wandering tourist. Which is probably why trying to find this place is reminiscent of childhood treasure hunts, because you can be guaranteed to find a truly unique treat in Black Coffee Lyrics. A place that is worlds away from Surfers Paradise.
I was lucky enough to come across Black Coffee Lyrics over the internet in a random search for a vintage flea market, and even with Google maps behind me it was nearly impossible to find. Even the local people didn't know about its hidden location. It is a little treasure trove for those of you who are searching for not just a truly unforgettable food experience, but one that comes with an addictively charming and alluring vibe that is humming with the laughter and vivacious talk of old friends. A warm and enchanting atmosphere, that is nostalgic of being in the comfort of your own home. It is enhanced by the retro vintage, quirky décor, composed of mismatched, distressed furniture, obscure artwork, vintage books cluttered into a cosy corner with softly dimmed lighting and a visually striking collection of bits and bobs that makes the entire room resemble an Aladins cave. (Make sure to look out for the army men crawling across the ceiling and the backwards clock.)
It is an ambiance that is created as soon as you cross the threshold with the acoustic melodies of the live music that flow from the open windows. You are greeted by the welcoming smiles of obliging and friendly staff who actually spend the time with you and go out of their way to ensure you get the most from the unique food experience they can offer with expert food and drink recommendations. They have an extensive drinks menu that takes longer to read than the food menu, with an impressive selection of beers, liquors and cocktails, with the option to create your own.
My meal here was certainly an impeccably creative explosion of flavours making it one of my best food experiences. With a lush, quail tapa for starters, succulent Barramundi fish for mains and a refreshingly dulcet desert, interestingly named ‘Oliver Twist’. Twist is a word that is the embodiment of the entire menu as each dish has a unique twist with an unusual combination of fresh ingredients and flavours that you would never otherwise think to combine. Making it such an adventurous and exciting experience with the artistic presentation of each meal that creates art on a plate. So much so it will entice you to get your camera out before you even think to pick up a knife and fork. It was all washed down with a refreshing, bitter sweet cider that left a pleasant after taste lingering on the tongue.
I would highly recommend that anyone who finds themselve’s in Surfers Paradise should take the time to spend an evening relishing in the marvel that is Black Coffee Lyrics. I can guarantee that you will never find another place like it and I am certain it will leave an impression that will linger in your thoughts and keep you coming back. But be warned, with the exception of the pizzas, this gourmet food certainly holds itself up the reputation of unreasonably small sized portions for the price you pay. So unless you are willing to part with a few extra dollars, don’t go there too famished. However, even just a relaxing evening of drinks without a meal, to just enjoy the ambiance of the setting is an altogether enjoyable and unforgettable experience.
To ensure that you are not disappointed however, I strongly recommend you make a reservation before you arrive as it seems they are extremely popular with the locals who are aware of existence and seems to be a regular haunt for those at the weekends which are terrifically busy and can sometimes be fully booked after 7pm.
