“Brilliant view and location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2010

We stayed in the busy January period in a 2 bedroom on an upper floor. Amazing view from Tweed River to Snapper to Kirra and Currumbin and across the water North to Surfers and Burleigh. On one of the clear days, you could see Stradbroke Island on the horizon.
The surfing at Snapper and Coolangatta kept the teenager entertained most days. Also the pool was a hit. The tennis court was not used which was a waste. One night we drove to Draculas which was really fantastic. We felt that the Outback spectacular was craptacular but we are not horse people or country music types. The other people there seemed to enjoy it.
The room was spotless with a nice kitchen with all facilities for cooking which saved a few bucks. We did however eat out at the Coolangatta Hotel which had some good live music and also the Coolangatta Surf Club which was cheap and and good for a family.
There are now really good walking paths right along the coasts so we tried to get a 5 km walk in every morning.
Overall we had a fantastic stay and will be back.

After reading some reviews I was a bit hesitant on booking, but honestly we could not have been happier. We stayed on a higher floor and the views from the bedrooms and living rooms could not have been better anywhere in the world. The room was very clean, and well equipped. The weather was perfect, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the local restaurants were great and we had a wonderfully relaxing few days. My tip for booking is to ask for a higher floor unit that has been refurbished recently, and you won't go wrong.

The apartment-style rooms offer up the essentials for a long weekend or week holiday. However if you don't want to cook your own meals, then rest assured that an array of dining options line the adjacent streets.

Great views from the balcony meant we spent abundant time looking out at the beach and waves from the privacy of our own space.

Meets all standards of other Mantra accommodations I've experienced.

We only stayed in this property for one night on our way down south so don't feel we got full use of the accomodation. For the little time we stayed, it was a well equipped apartment ideally located and the views were lovely from the balcony.

This is supposed to be a 4 star apartment, but the furniture in our 3 bedroom apartment was mismatched, and looked like it belonged in a beach house. All the rooms are small as is the balcony, which made it quite crowded with 6 people. . Apparantly some apartments are better than others, depending on whether the owner has renovated it or not. We obviously got one that is badly in need of a renovation so it was not good value for the money we paid. .We have stayed at Points North Apartments before which was excellent for the same price. However, the staff were great, the place was clean and the facilities good., but, there is much better value available at Cooloongatta.

I had a lovely two-week stay - needed some "me-time". I thoroughly enjoyed all the facilities on offer including the lovely pool, the spa, sauna and gym. I went for many long walks on the beautiful beach - that is when I wasn't enjoying the spectacular view from my very private balcony. The room was very clean and all the facilities were in top condition - I could even watch the ocean whilst I had a shower - brilliant!! The staff were friendly and helpful although very busy because this is a popular destination for families, couples, etc. This hotel is seconds from many and varied eateries and cute shops. However, if you want to cook your own, a large shopping centre with two major supermarkets is only 10 minutes walk (Tweed Mall). If you want somewhere to stay on the Gold Coast, forget Surfers (yuk) and try Coolangatta.

After our stay at this hotel, we wrote this letter of complaint to send to them:

Recently we came and stayed at the Coolangatta branch of the Mantra hotels for 8 days, during which we did the regular holiday activities that one would do whilst in the gold coast.

This trip was planned as part of an engagement celebration and birthday and your hotel was booked online with a shown rating of 4.5 stars. A number of events and findings over our stay made us question your displayed rating. We would also like to point out that it was not a complete lack of competence in all of your staff as a couple of them were quite helpful in a particular situation. If we had not prepaid online we would have changed hotels mid stay. Listed below are some of the things we thought were worth mentioning, taking into account how much it costs to stay at your hotels:

We booked our stay 3/4 weeks in advance and on the application we were able to select an arrival time of 10:30am. Our flight arrived at 8:30am (on time) from there we picked up our rental car at 9:30 (on time) and drove the one or so hours to your hotel. We arrived exactly at 10:30am only to find that our room wasn’t anywhere near ready. In fact it took a grand total of three hours before we were able to gain access. We were hot and over dressed as we flew in from New Zealand and needed a change of clothes, which we ended up having to do in the underground car park of your establishment.
However this is no reflection on the staff at the front desk as they tried to help and were genuinely nice about the whole affair.

Once eventually getting access to our room, we were both in desperate need of a shower. To our amazement we found black/dark green substances growing in the corners of the shower. Photos are included. We expected after being kept waiting for three hours that these sorts of things would have been dealt with. However we discovered that as well as the shower the oven and top shelves had undesirably dirty appearances. The oven was caked in previously cooked substances, photos are included. We ended up spending the good part of an hour scrubbing just one of the trays so we could use it. The top cupboard above the fridge had scatterings of crumbs throughout it, photos provided.

On your website and even in your brochure that sits in your rooms you state that stainless steel appliances are provided. However unless I am mistaken white plastic is not classed as stainless steel as that’s what your appliances were constructed out of.

Once gaining access to our room and boycotting the shower we decided to change before going out again as the car park only provided temporary relief. We noticed that on the right hand side there was a nice net curtain provided which we drew. We then went to draw the left hand side only to discover that it was non existent, forcing us to draw the light blocking curtains.

This is not our first time staying in the gold coast and in all our previous stays the air conditioning unit was able to cool to any desired temperature as Brisbane is not one of the cooler places you can be. However upon reading your hand book we discovered that the air conditioning unit was not able to handle anything less then 22 degrees, which is heat wave in Christchurch New Zealand (where we reside).

During our stay over a couple of days there were strong winds, which is to no fault of your hotel. However during the time we spent in our room i.e. trying to sleep. We discovered that the mixture of the way your sliding doors are constructed and high winds cause a rather irritating gushing and whistling noise.

To accompany this, your lifts cease to function in high winds. Not wanting to test the lifts to much in this scenario we chose to take the stairs. On encountering the stairs we discovered they were not lit which during periods where the lift is not functioning we thought was absolutely stupid as there is no windows to provide any light what so ever. We attempted to go back to our room only to find that the door to get back into the hotel was firmly locked. This forced us to walk down the flights of stairs from the forth floor in complete and utter darkness. The only assistance that we had, were the tiny amounted of light emitted by our cell phones which we luckily remembered. This still did not however stop one of us from nearly tripping and falling down the solid concrete steps in the darkness.

We have stayed in 3 star hotels that have provided, as part of your stay, a daily complimentary turn down service. So being a 4.5 star hotel we were rather shocked that it costs $40 a day to receive the same service that we have previously got for free.
We noticed that the rooms came with available safes which we thought was a great idea. We attempted to use it as directed but found that the door would not shut. After reading your handbook about the safe, we were very surprised to find it costs and additional $3 per day. This was not stated when the booking was made on your website and we found it quite annoying considering we didn’t book the cheapest hotel in the area. At previous hotels this was included free of charge. To boot when the safe was not in use it continuously jammed the wardrobe door with its own.

Overall we did not think that your hotel deserved the 4.5 star rating as we have stayed in 3 star hotels with better services and cleaner facilities and we were very disappointed to find this out. Upon choosing our next hotel when staying in the gold coast we will make sure that it will not be the Mantra on Coolangatta. When being asked where to stay by friends and family you will be guarantied not to be recommended.

We honestly hope you can get your act together as this will probably not be the last letter from dissatisfied customers that stayed at your hotels.

We were so disappointed with the place that we couldn’t even bring ourselves to post the letter to them. We just wanted to put the whole thing behind us.
