Fantastic Tour. Very informative, leisurely pace. I am a local and Mitch filled in some of the missing information. I have booked more tours and will happily take visitors on his tours. Thanks Mitch!

“Walking tour of Port Macquarie”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

Recently we had the pleasure of a walking tour hosted by Mr. Mitch McKay on a Heritage walk around Port Macquarie. This was a truly amazing tour and opened our eyes to just how old this town is and just how much of the early history of Australia started here, The Glass House Museum which is built over the original cottages is truly amazing and Mr. McKay as Heritage officer at the time was able to inform us of all that the early settlers had to face, for history buffs a must take walk, which we enjoyed very much.

“Absolutely Fascinating Insight into Port Macquarie's History”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

Some people think it may be macabre to visit cemetry's whilst grieving the recent loss of my husband but as a history "nut" and trying to take my mind off matters, I booked myself on this tour and I should like to thank Mitch for his wonderful enthusiasm , knowledge and passion. I shall never come to Port Macquarie again with blinkers on. My goodness what a rich history and diverse population buried in this unique little cemetry.
Mitch was kind enough to drive me to the wonderful church afterwards so that I could see the grave under the first pew.
i shall definitely go on his other tours when next visiting Port Macquarie.

Mitch . . We would like to thank you for one of the best, most informative, friendly and pleasant heritage walks that we have been on. We would like to congratulate you on your knowledge, enthusiasm and presentation of the tour, it showed that you have an extensive knowledge of the subject but most importantly a passion for it also, again thank you

“We Walked with Mitch ( Aug 13)”

HISTORIC CEMETERY TOUR, PM

A visitor to PM today can have a DIY tour of the historic cemetery & learn, for example, that of about60, mostly young, people who died in the first year or so of its convict times, only 5 were women. You can enjoy the pleasant, open location, too, & discover something of the variety of its scattered early graves.

But if you take a guided walk with the well-connected Mitch McKay, who has long experience of living here & its town planning, you will also gain lots of insights into the patterns of life in the town's early days.
Mitch is friendly & enthusiastic, so you are entertained as he explains along the way what can be learnt from the different kinds of stone used, different grave styles, & the iron fences around them. And how a seemingly straightforward observation can lead to a wrong conclusion.
The tour is well presented & professional,so it's enjoyable ( especially if the weather's great, as it was last week) & good value.

Yes, there's lots you'd miss by doing it yourself, especially the stories of the social, romantic & business lives of its early residents. Mitch doesn't overload you, but there's more variety in those early years of its history than you'd expect. He tells stories from his own experience too, making you realise that he's the right person to be conducting the tour. He has both the knowledge & a knack for sharing it.

There's lots to do & plenty of variety in PM, & Mitch's tour is one activity I recommend highly.
(The town has a variety of lovely landscapes on its doorstep & the town itself has plenty to offer as well, so we've been back several times.)
