“EVERYTHING you want from a weekend in the Hunter Valley”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2011

What can I say? This place meets and exceeds all expectations that you might have on a weekend break in the wine region. We were a group of ten thirty-somethings (plus mamma all the way from Italy) and we booked the two cottages. My highlights:

1. The cottages are immaculately appointed. They have got character, they are large, they are clean, they contain everything you need: from a proper coffee machine to a fireplace for those winter getaways, top quality local stuff for breaky, cheese and wine on arrival, verandas with BBQ, port and chocolate and more.

2. The owner Bobby is delightful. She is friendly but not intrusive, efficient, helpful and just utterly pleasant. She helped us organize a wine tour and gave us top tips on local restaurants (real gastro heavens if you are foodies...check out my other reviews on the area).

3. The place is perfectly located for wine/chocolate/olive oil/cheese and any other type of indulgence tasting in the area. It is easy to reach from Sydney (about 160km).

4. There are quite a few amenities such as pool, golf course, gardens.

All in all this was a magical weekend and I will be back.

I decided to surprise my boyfriend with a trip away for his 30th. We had an amazing time in the Hunter Valley and our stay at Splinters definitely contributed. Our host Bobby (who also owns the guest house) was so helpful, she pointed out some great wineries and sights to see and went above and beyond to get us and other guests booked into restaurants for the busy long weekend. The breakfasts in the morning were delicious!!! Bobby is quite the chef and whipped up savory scones, egg tarts and croissants.

The rooms were lovely and clean with everything you could need. The cheese and wine on arrival was a lovely touch and the chocolate supply was replenished every morning which for a chocoholic like me was awesome!

I can't recommend this enough, if you want a personal touch to your stay in the Hunter you couldn't pick a better place to kick back after a long day of wine tasting (such a tough life!)

We were lucky to stay at Splinters guest house over the Easter long weekend, we booked the cottage and stayed there with a couple of friends one night, and family another 3 nights. Bobby (the owner) was really accommodating, and arranged for one of the rooms and its bathroom to be cleaned at the turnover.

Splinters is a really nice place to stay, central in the Hunter Valley wine region a great location to try the different cellar doors and restaurants in the area. The owners go out of their way to may your stay as enjoyable as possible, including tips for wineries and restaurants to try, book your dinner or lunch, provide fresh herbs from all over the property (the chillies are hot!!) and really providing you with everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay.

The cottage has all the facilities you need, two separate bed- and bathrooms, a fully stocked kitchen, very nice fireplace and comes with a cheese platter, wine and some port on arrival.. what more do you need for a relaxing getaway??

highly recommended!

We arrived right on check in time of 2 pm and the cottage (The Lodge) we had booked was all ready to go. We had a lovely welcome by Bobbi and guided tour of the property and the accommodation which was immaculate.
The cottage consisted of a mezzanine level with two queen beds and an en suite upstairs, and down stairs a separate bathroom, queen bedroom, 8 person dinning table, lounge area with fire place and a kitchen which had so many gadgets including a very flash coffee machine for lattes every morning.
We walked to some of the vineyards that were close by, cooked a roast on the BBQ which is under cover and attached to the cottage, spent a very wet afternoon in front of the fireplace with some of our wine purchases steadily consumed and leisurely breakfasts (fully - and I mean fully - provided for!) on the verandah watching the birds, playful horses and occasional kangaroo hop by.
Just what we needed!

We stayed at Splinters for two nights while touring the Hunter Valley and we had the guest cottage with one bedroom, one bathroom, kitchen/dining/living downstairs and a two bed mezzanine level with its own shower room. The cottage is very cute and cosy with comfortable furnishings and it is very clean. Hostess Bobbie had already saved our bacon when she was able to procure a wine tasting tour for us when it seemed everyone was booked. She then made two perfect restaurant recommendations for us and even made the bookings. She stocked the fridge with food for us, which was really great - we did not use the grounds much as it was a bit chilly but we did see kangaroos wandering around at times, which we enjoyed so much, especially the kids. All in all we spent a very pleasant couple of days here, feeling well taken care of. I am not usually a guest house or B&B person, but I think Splinters is the place to stay in Pokolbin for the personal service and local knowledge of its proprietors. Only drawback is the wifi was not reliable - it worked about half the time, and I believe we paid extra for it. Not too much of a tragedy as we were quite busy with other activities.

After a long day wine tasting in the Hunter Valley Splinters Guest House is a very welcome retreat.
Clean, comfortable and well-appointed rooms, and extremely friendly service - in fact perfect.

We recently returned home (UK) after a 3 week stay in Australia, travelling independently, visiting 4 main locations – Splinters in the Hunter Valley was our last destination. We decided on a visit to the Hunter Valley after being on a cruise to New Zealand, and listening to one of our fellow passengers, an ex-Brit who had lived in Australia for many years saying that he would really like to go to the Hunter Valley ‘one last time’. So following his recommendation, we planned on a 3 day stay, and booked with Splinters following the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor.

We thoroughly agree with all the positive views given of Splinters and of Bobby – the accommodation is 1st Class, as is her attention to detail. Other reviewers have informed of the amenities and services provided and so I will not repeat my versions of these positive comments. I will however expand a little in respect to Bobby. What an organiser! We arrived following a 5 hour journey and Bobby took charge! She arranged for a Wine Tour the next day via James Wine Tours, when otherwise we would have probably taken the next day to laze. If we had, we would have missed an excellent tour around some small Hunter Valley wineries. The tour was really well throughout and James, our guide, informative and welcoming, as were the Vineyards he chose. Unlike some of our fellow passengers, we ‘sampled’ the wine offered in the correct way, by swallowing, rather than just ‘taste and dispose’, as there are taste sensors leading down from the throat to the stomach – wine connoisseurs please note. By lunchtime we were feeling really happy about our trip! When returning to Splinters in the late afternoon, Bobby was helping to plan our following day’s itinerary! We determined upon a round trip in the Hunter Valley, taking in Wollombi and partaking in Dr Jurds Jungle Juice (again on Bobby’s recommendation). This was a very pleasant drive around deserted roads, many of which were formed through early convict labour which the Wollombi Museum features, as well as the early settlers of the town – well worth a visit. We enjoyed our meal and the aforesaid Dr Jurds Jungle Juice, the like of which I had not sampled before – very pleasant. On return to Splinters, I had mentioned to Bobby that I had not seen and kangaroos on this trip (apart from some road casualties) – guess what, as it was going dusk what should appear but a group of 3 kangaroos at the bottom of our patio – how does she do it?

Really enjoyed our stay and recommend to future guests to follow Bobby’s advice to make your visit to the Hunter Valley ‘special’.
