“Very Good Value & Pleasant Outlook”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2009

In a region with often outrageous hotel prices, this place was great value at $125 for a Sunday night on a long weekend. Studio was roomy, clean and perfect for our one night stay. Duplex chalets give it a village feel. The adjoining room was vacant (we think), so cannot really comment on possible noise factor, although with an adjoining door, it would probably let in a bit of noise. Overall, a pleasant stay in nice surroundings.

Stayed one night as part of a road trip up the coast from Sydney.

Great place to stay, each of the rooms are separate chalets (they call the chateau) with great views over a lake and open countryside. Very close to the Tyrrells winery (take a $5 tour at 1.30 each day).

Chalets are separated into a studio and a one bed apartment, or linked to form a 2 bed (which we had). Well equipped with two bathrooms both with corner spa baths. Mini kitchen, but perfectly adequate.

The kids insisted on swimming, but (it being winter) the pool wasn't heated and it was very cold.

We stayed in a one-bedroom apartment and found it to be spacious and clean. The location is excellent. You can walk to Tempus Two (also Roche Wine & Smelley Cheese Shop), Broken Wood, McGuigan, Hunter Valley Gardens, Harrigan's Pub & The Winemake Centre. Five minutes drive to Rosemount Estate & Lindeman.

The studio rooms are quite small, so make sure you like your traveling partner! But they are clean and not overly dated. Nice little patio area with table and chairs to enjoy the sunset or sunrise (depending on your preference), or have a sneaky cigarette!

The buffet breakfast was overpriced for what was offered. It seemed as though they had run out of most things and we got there only 30 minutes after the opening time. We didn't eat dinner on-site, preferring to sample some of the local restaurants.

Be careful is you're coming in after dark, it's easy to get lost with all the identical huts!

My only complaint would be to do with the customer service, a smile doesn't cost a lot ladies! My partner left the mobile phone charger in the room and when I rang to organise it to be forwarded to us (less than 12hrs after we left) it seemed to be a major drama to have housekeeping check the room! Surely they have to clean it regardless. Then the charger was sent to us COD - it cost $20 for me to collect from the post office!!! And we only live an hour away, I would have been happy to collect it, or they could have popped it into a $5.50 prepaid satchel and charged it my credit card. A costly lesson!

We stayed here for two nights on a road trip from the Gold Coast to Sydney. We arrived shortly before 6pm when reception was closed and the woman wasn't particularly friendly, but we put it down to her wanting to go home. My husband asked her if they had a computer with internet access that we could use because we needed to get an email confirmation for our wine tour the following day, but her reaction was "yes, but not one you can use. There is wifi in the rooms" charming, if we had a laptop with us, would we have asked to use their computer?! The room was more like a self-catering apartment and had a living room with a small kitchen, plus the bathroom and bedroom. It was clean and tidy and perfectly adequate for a couple of nights. The restaurant was closed both nights we were there, although we weren't told this when we checked in, so we got in the car and had a drive around to find somewhere. We came across the Hunter Valley Gardens, which is just around the corner from the hotel, so took the car back so we could both have a drink. The walk back to the Hunter Valley Gardens was pretty scary, given that there is virtually no street lighting in the area and the main street light on the junction was not working. We resorted to using our mobile phones to shed some light and as a warning to oncoming motorists who were driving quite fast given the lack of light and bad roads. Anyway, the Steakhouse was good and so was the Cellar restaurant we tried the next night, which is in the Gardens, but further round. The first morning we were there we were heading off on a tour of the boutique wineries - would absolutely recommend Boutique Wine Tours, run by Brian and Delia Metcalfe - and went into reception asking about taxis to take us to a restaurant further out. The same woman was on reception and her answer to our query was "haven't got a clue" there was no offer to find out, no suggestions for closer restaurants, nothing! She has to be the rudest receptionist I've ever had to deal with, and believe me, there have been a few!!! So, if you want to stay in Pokolbin this place is ok, but I'm sure you'd find a more personable service elsewhere! We were told to try Peppers, but unfortunately they were booked.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. This was our first time in the Hunter Valley and was happy with our choice. The Leisure Inn is in a great central location to the wine region and walking distance to the Hunter Gardens and a few restaurants. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant and was happy with the meal. The only thing that lets this hotel down is the accommodation. While comfortable and well equipped the walls are quite thin and we did not have much sleep on the 1st night due to noisy neighbours. The 2nd night however was very peaceful. I know they try and space people when they don't have many bookings, but would not like to spend a few nights with side by side neighbours.

We arrived at the hotel at about 8pm to find reception shut and two keys left for us rather than one. We used the phone by the lock box and got through to someone that was some distance away and couldn't really help. We took one set of keys and left the second in the box and explained to reception the next morning. For some reason the internet site had made two bookings for us!

The restaurant was just closing when we got there at 8:30pm and we had to drive to another hotel (Harrigan's Irish pub and accomodation) to get some food (the best sausage and mash in Australia).

The whole area around Pokolbin is sparsley spread out and not very well lit with no footpaths and so walking to the Chinese restaurant up the road was a little dangerous.

If you want to visit the wineries in the area, a minibus tour is recommended. You get to try approx. five different wines at each of the five different cellar doors you visit with no obligation to buy. If you go to the wineries yourself there is a bit more pressure to buy and you only get to taste the wines that you are interested in buying.

  • Liked — The winery trip (but you can book this at any hotel in the area!)
  • Disliked — check-in and restaurant opening
