“Stunning scenery, delightfully cosy, excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

The scenery at Carriages is absolutely beautiful. Cottages are secluded so you really feel as though you’re away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, yet located centrally to Pokolbin’s many vineyards and restaurants.

We stayed in The Gatehouse which was very comfortably furnished and well serviced. Staff were attentive and friendly. The breakfast basket delivered right to the door each morning, cooking facilities and wide selection of DVD’s mean you can make the most of your accommodation and spend time relaxing indoors...perfect in cold weather!

We've stayed here twice now, once as a couple and once with my future in-laws and both experiences were amazing - pure relaxation. The first time we stayed it was winter and it rained the whole weekend but we really enjoyed putting the fire in the room on, borrowing a couple of DVDs and chilling out with a bottle of red. The second time it was the middle of summer and we spent our time in between wine tasting relaxing in the pool and listening to the nature from the verandah. The owners are very friendly and accommodating and didn't even mind when we moved the tables to the garden to enjoy our breakfast in the sun. The well thought out breakfast basket arrives before dawn and is such a nice experience to unpack and enjoy at leisure. You can also walk to a few vineyards from the house and enjoy dinner at Roberts without driving. Well recommended! I can't imaging choosing anywhere else in the Hunter Valley to stay now.

I have just stayed at Carriages Country House for a 2 night break. The accommodation was fantastic. Very comfortable. The fireplace a welcome comfort on the chilly evenings. breakfast hampers were delightful. Altogether a great stay. Highly recommend this venue. Staff are very helpful and situation in the Hunter Valley is awesome. It does not have a fitness centre but does have a great pool and Tennis court.

Room Tip: Book a room with a fireplace as they are much larger.

We stayed at Carriages in February for my mothers surprise 60th birthday weekend. The staff at Carriages helped enormously with our planning and the accommodation was beyond what we ever expected! We booked the 8 bedroom house - all guests commented on the amazing decor and hospitality, not to mention the delicious baskets at our door for breakfast!
Thankyou for a fantastic weekend!

We stayed at the Carriages to escape the city just after New Year. We were warmly greeted on arrival and as it was our first visit to the Hunter, the member of staff at reception really took the time to show us local guidebooks and even recommended and called a nearby restaurant to book us in for our first evening meal. The guesthouse was made up of 4 or 5 self contained rooms with a long wooden verandah at the front. Surrounded by nothing but forest and vineyard for as far as the eye could see, sitting on the verandah's wooden chairs watching the wildlife as the sunset really was the perfect way to relax! The rooms are 'old-world' with lovely individual touches and furnishing, plus all the standards you'd expect (fridge, freezer, kettle, phone, toasting oven, flat screen tv, aircon etc etc). Everything was very clean and well presented, the guesthouse as a whole was well kept, neat and tidy. The bed was particularly comfortable and the high pressure shower was very welcome after the drive from Sydney! After a great night's sleep, my girlfriend and I woke up to find a breakfast basket of muffins, toast, cereal, fresh milk and orange juice on our door step. This is just one example of the individual touches that really made a difference. The Carriages is located about 5-10 minutes drive from the town and surrounded in all directions by wineries and restaurants. Having a car is ideal, but places are walkable and there's a swimming pool and tennis court on site. If you are visit the Hunter, we'd definitely recommend a stay at the Carriages. It's location, friendly staff and peaceful setting make it a very romantic and special getaway spot. Somewhere I've recommended to friends and will visit again hopefully very soon.

Between Christmas and New Year we spent a night at the Carriages. It's a great place with well decorated rooms and it's set in a very peaceful environment neighbouring a forest on one side and the vineyard on the other. The pepper tree cellar door is in walking distance and sells great wines. If you're looking for a nice and quiet b&b in the lower Hunter then this is a great place to stay.

We have stayed at the Carriages a couple of times, would have been more but it's so often booked out!

This is a great little secret for those who know it. We can't get enough. Both times we have booked in the Main House, a Verandah Suite, and ended up in the same room.

The rooms are quaint and old-world, with lovely furniture and an open fire. Best to go on a chilly evening! :)

The people who run the place are so friendly, do whatever they can to make your stay special, and stop by for a chat when out and about in the garden. Look out though, they will try relentlessly to sell you their Carriages branded wine!

There is a pool and tennis court near the main house, not that we've ever used it.

Just down the road (and just walkable) are a few nice wineries like PepperTree and Kevin Sobels. A bit further down the road is Tempus Two and some boutique wineries.

Really love this place and would recommend to anyone looking for a nice getaway in the Hunter

Room Tip: The main house Verandah Suites are amazing
