“Tackiest and most tasteless hotel ever stayed in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2008

Recommended by a nearby hotel (which was full) as a good 5 star hotel.

Receptionist wanted to know if my husband was with his wife!!
It was the tackiest and most tasteless accommodation I have ever stayed in....even had grubby looking lingerie hanging up in the room for you to wear!!!!!

Musty and very smelly, cannot comment on breakfast as didn't fancy it and couldn't get out fast enought.

Stayed February 2008

When you check in at the Hunter Resort, you are met with a number of awards from the late nineties. It seems that little has happened since. The place badly needs an upgrade, though the rooms are big and clean. The food served in the restaurant is very good. The service from the reception and the staff is also very good.

However, having been to this place and seen other 4* resorts in the area, we would recommend friends to stay at a more modern place. It seems that this is a 4* resort having been reduced to a 3*, as they have the facilities, but not the quality.

This hotel was terrible! I had to pass under 3 huge spider webs (with actual spiders in them) just to get to reception.

Once we checked into our room (the French Bordello) we discovered it was quite dirty and in need of a MAJOR refurbishment. The themed thing is cute if done properly, but this was just tacky. Everything in the room looked about 20 years old

It rates it self as a 5 star - i would say its more along the lines of a 2 star.

We stayed here as part of a 6 week honeymoon round Australia and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the region. It was easy to find and the girl on reception was lovely and friendly and made us feel very welcome. Parking is free, the rooms are clean and spacious and have a dvd player as part of the tv which is a nice touch (you can rent dvds from the reception if the drinking and eating becomes to much). As a guest you get a free tour of the winery and tasting at the cellar door which was really entertaining and there is a brewery on site (the Blue Tongue Brewery) where in addition to sampling the various brews including an alcoholic ginger beer which I can highly recommend, you can get really good food - you should definitely try the pies.

The weather was a little dismal unluckily but there are definitely worse things than being 'trapped' in a place with good food, great wine and fantastic beer!! We spent a wonderful two days sampling all of those things and were very well looked after by all the staff.

stayed for 1 night at the hunter resort, found the accomdation rather basic, not as good as the photos i had seen on the net. it was clean, but could do with a bit of modernising. the staff were very friendly and we saw kangaroos in the evening, which was lovely. the restaurant is very nice, amazing food and great choice of wine (as it should be)!! got a free tour of the winery the following day which was good.

We had a great time at the resort in the peaceful and relaxing surroundings and would definately recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in the Hunter Valley wine country.

We stayed in a "Spa Room" and found the accommodation to be most outstanding.

The staff were very nice and we enjoyed dinner and breakfast at their superb restaurant - with compliments to the chef for some great meals!

Overall, it was a fantastic stay!

The Casablanca themed suite is unique and beautiful, with much attention shown to detail. There are many thoughtful touches as well, such as a discretely placed umbrella in case of rain. It made for a passionate mood and was an extremely memorable place to stay. Our three course meal was very enjoyable and well presented. Substantial breakfast provisions exceeded my expectations. Staff were all attentive and friendly. We will certainly return.

Our one night midweek package (which included a bottle of wine, a 3 course meal and breakfast) was very good value, considering the standard of the food and accommodation. Under this package, guests are able to select anything from the menu and are not restricted to certain dishes.

In my opinion, the themed suites are best suited for couples wishing to enjoy a romantic stay.

  • Liked — Unique themed room
  • Disliked — Didn't particularly enjoy the wine that came free with our package but we don't generally like sweet whites.
