Went to the Hunter Valley region for a weekend and went wine-tasting at Brokenwood. While the cellar door is small and old-school, it has a certain charm to it. Busy afternoon as lots of people were tasting, but we were very well-looked after by a young lady named Fraiah (thank you!) who took us through the tasting and recommended some selections for us to try as well. The overall quality of their wines is outstanding and priced amazing ly well. Some great Semillon (Hunter) and Chardonnay (Beechworth) but the pick was the Shiraz selection. We tried the Mistress Block Shiraz and even though it was $75 per bottle, the quality of the wine even at such a young age was outstanding. We'll save it for a period of time before bringing it out on a special occasion. The Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz is classified as Outstanding by Langton's (like a wine stock exchange, they rate the wines based on pedigree, vintage and tastings). Cannot wait to get my hands on a couple of those (not cheap @ $100 per bottle), but worth it for a special occasion!
In short, one of the "MUST-DO" wineries on any Hunter Valley wine-tasting trip. Iconic wines and great, friendly staff that inform you as you taste wines.
