“Just OK. Very busy. Disappointed we were not advised pre-dinner wedding drinks would be held in garden outside our door.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

Stayed here for 3 nights that included a weekend. Hotel is in a good location, about a 7/8 minute drive from the second wineries' turn-off in Cessnock and about 7 minutes from the junction of Broke and McDonald's Roads. The hotel is on a large property and is surrounded by fields and vineyards.

Hotel complex is also quite large with over 70 rooms contained in 5 different buildings that are both either side and behind the building containing the main reception/dining area. There are covered pathways between each of the buildings and the main reception/dining area. There were also 2 fairly large car parks at either end of the complex.

Our room was on the ground floor of the Manor House, the last building on one side of the main reception/dining area, but only a 3/4 minute walk away. The car park at our end of the complex was effectively on the same level as the top level of the Manor House. You then descended 20 stairs, down a very grand staircase, to get to the ground floor.

Room was a reasonable size and contained a queen sized bed, two person sofa, wardrobe, strange upright cabinet that contained the bar fridge, table, desk, chair and only one bed-side table and lamp (difficult for the person on the other side of the bed to read). The bed was on a wooden frame that was quite high off the floor. All of the furniture was pretty dated. Bathroom was quite small with a washbasin with a small cabinet underneath, toilet and shower. Shower pressure was good but ran hot and cold. There was no safe. Could also hear noise from people walking around in the rooms and on the balcony upstairs. Room was air-conditioned and the WIFI was free and worked well.

Outside was a nice garden area with a table and two chairs and a good view of the fields and vineyards. The garden area was accessed via a sliding glass door. There was no fly screen on the sliding door.

The hotel was crowded with what appeared to be guests for 2 wedding parties. Check-in on Friday took a good 10 minutes, there being a queue with only one staff member present for the first 5 minutes. Breakfast was also a very crowded affair on both the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

We were also very disappointed that we were not advised that there would be pre-dinner wedding drinks taking place in the garden just outside our door. We arrived back to our room at about 4-30pm on Saturday to have a brief rest and get ready for dinner only to find a crowd of people directly outside our sliding door. Too much noise to read a book and sitting outside was certainly out of the question as wedding guests were sitting at our table and chairs. Thought this was pretty poor on management's behalf a) not to advise us of this fact and b) that they did not allocate these rooms on the ground floor to guests of the wedding party - pretty easy to ask if they were attending the wedding at check-in and allocate the rooms accordingly. Had to close our curtains to get any privacy.

Cleaning was an issue. We had a cheese platter on the Friday afternoon and unfortunately some biscuit crumbs fell on the floor. They were still there on Monday morning when we checked out. Also there were still a couple of empty bottles and sticks from meat skewers from the pre-dinner wedding drinks on Saturday on our outside table and the air-conditioning unit on Monday morning.

There was a good mix of hot and cold offerings for breakfast and the staff did very well restocking everything given how busy it was on Saturday and Sunday mornings - the billiard table was being used as a large buffet table. We had to wait a good 5 minutes for a table on Sunday morning. The hotel should though look at retiring its 2x4 slice toasters - totally inadequate for such a large crowd.

There was quite a good walking track around the property.

Would look elsewhere next visit.

Room Tip: Ask if there is to be a wedding in the grounds and get a room away from the action - unless of cours...

Have stayed here 3 times this year and had a great time each visit. The hotel is set in lovely gardens with rural views over the valley. The rooms are of a good standard and the restaurant produces a excellent standard of breakfast and dinner is high quality for a hotel restaurant. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a 4 star hotel in the Hunter Valley.

This is a great place to stay when you are in the Hunter Valley rooms were very clean and well appointed, large comfortable bed, great food in restaurant. I had read several reviews on this place and I am surprised that they were not happy. Pool area and Gym great attended a wedding party here and all other guests were very happy.

Room Tip: Rooms in wing overlooking gardens and pool area great balcony and views.

There are surprisingly few really good accommodation options in the Hunter Valley. The Sebel Kirkton Park doesn't do anything to improve this.

While the location is beautiful, if slightly out of the way, and the rooms are comfortable, it isn't a truly great hotel.

The layout is odd, with multiple U shaped accommodation buildings that are colonial in a cheapish modern kind of way. Finding your room can be tricky, as the buildings are not located conveniently to either the main reception building, nor to the car parks, of which there are several. Paths through the garden are also illogically laid out, as they don't really lead from one building to the other.

The rooms themselves are comfortable and clean, if slightly dated. The beautiful, wide verandahs are let down by the fact that they're shared by multiple rooms, making it difficult to enjoy a quiet breakfast for two, or a sneaky after dark drink outside.

In spite of this, it's probably still one of the better options in the Hunter.

On arrival for a booked High Tea for myself and a friend we were not greeted on arrival and had to wait to be shown to the conservatorium , which was hot with the air-conditioning not being set for an extremely warm day. The other tables in the conservatorium had not been cleared from breakfast even though it was now lunch time.
Things did not get better from here... the staff were disorganised and the service was poor!
The first thing brought to us was cold water, however it was full of black particles. We were given a glass of sparkling wine and then asked if we would like coffee or tea. We asked if we could have our coffee a little later and the waitress never came back. I then had to go looking for her some time later to get coffee served. We were given our three tiered stand of stale bread sandwiches, small cakes and what was supposed to be fluffy scones, which were actually more like a rock cake and inedible.
All in all it was a horrible experience and I would not recommend it to anyone.
