“Lovely and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

We stayed from Friday - Sunday recently. It was my husband and my first trip to the Hunter. We couldnt get into Peppers Convent so we chose here and loved it! It is more a boutique style hotel, but its just gorgeous. Our favourite thing to do was sit in the little bar by the warm fire with a wine before dinner. The breakfast was a little underwhelming but we just had coffee so didnt affect us. It is everything youd want in a boutique style hotel. We had a vintage room and it was lovely (202). We will definently be back, thank you.

Room Tip: The rooms have a shared verandah

stayed for a weekend with my sister. Beautiful property in a lovely setting but in need of a refurbishment. Paint work is very chipped and common areas look far past their best. Rooms are OK but the bathrooms are very small. There was a bottle of water next to the bed that they charged us $7 for. Not good. Went to the spa which is in a small building at the back of the resort. The building is very small & not up to spa standards of other resorts. Treatments were good but they charged 10% on top of treatment costs as it was a weekend. Totally unnecessary so wont go back. Had dinner in Chez Pok which was pleasant but the service was a bit chaotic. Nice to sit in the bar area in front of the fire.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Peppers recently. The property was beautiful and overall our experience was very good. We found the staff to be efficient, friendly and competent. Room service dinner was delivered in good time and breakfasts (buffet and made to order) had a good selection of cooked and cold options. The bed was comfortable and bathroom perfectly adequate. The highlight for us was dining at Chez Pok (the restaurant on site). We found the food to be outstanding & served in good time. The wait staff were friendly and efficient. We spent most of our days "out and about" but it was nice to come back late in the afternoon to watch the kangaroos graze while relaxing with a glass of wine. We would be happy to return.

I have stayed a few times at Peppers Guest House in the Hunter Valley but the last time before this week was about 7 years ago. The food at Chez Pok is excellent (although it took 90 minutes to come out after 30 minute wait to order). The beds are very comfortable and the grounds are great - complete with kangaroos and warbling magpies. The problems that we faced this time though were disappointing. Please hire some staff! We know staff costs can kill a business but really, the person that checks me in should not be also working the bar and the dinner service. The place needs a professional bar person. No cocktails. No-one knows how to make a decent log fire, or at least keep it going. It all just ends up being a bit unprofessional and for the money paid here, the guests deserve better. The people that are here are friendly, but there are just not enough of them. It's difficult to come back now so will next time try another establishment.

Room Tip: If going as a family, there are adjoining rooms which can be helpful.

We stayed with our 2 children for 2 nights and were expecting the Peppers of years gone by, but left feeling like those days are way behind them. The mould in the shower area, the tiny bathrooms, the rancid smelling chips from the minibar that on closer inspection were out of date, the minibar not being restocked the next morning .... But the thing that really left me feeling flat was the water running (leaky toilet next door perhaps ??) all night every 30 seconds for 5 secs at a time. I tried to call reception at 11 pm when it was clear to me we were not going to get any sleep and was offered another room if I wanted to wait 15 mins until someone could arrive on site. I declined because I didn't want to disturb anyone although I already had ... I can't fault the staff, everyone was polite and always trying their best to rectify situations and the main building feels warm and welcoming although we did need to ask to have the fire lit. The problem is the rooms and a feeling that the hotel has seen it's best days and needs a lot of TLC to bring it back from the brink. I'm going home now ... To get some sleep!

Saw a great deal to stay here so didn't expect the best room in the place. First room at the back with a bush view, tiny dingy bathroom with a badly chipped hand basin and bashed furniture was a bit sad but we could live with that. Then we sat on the bed and it made a very loud sqeaking sound every time you moved! staff came to try and fix it-no success. To their credit they promptly gave us another room which was far nicer. Better condition, bigger, lovely bathroom and a view of the very pretty garfens. I think they do themselves a dis service when they put guests into rooms that they must know are not the quality people expect. Staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was good, gardens and building very pretty, plenty of parking and a good location. Shame that the owners won't spend any money on fixing things that are broken.

Before I get a defensive response from Management, Yes, we have sorted out our issues and have recieved adequate compensation, but I believe a review is in order anyway. I think by reading most reviews on this guest house, maybe some work needs to be done to bring you up to the quality that Peppers reputation is known for and maybe a humble approach would be best suited rather than constant defensive replies. That many people can't be wrong.

We booked for a 2 night stay a few weeks ago and paid more thinking we were going to Peppers, so therefore we would get 4.5 star quality that was expected. Unfortunately it did NOT come anywhere near that quality in service or accomodation. It was like a comedy of errors, just one thing after the other. I could go indepth but will give a brief overview.
* Arrived and checked in and upon asking for assistance with our bags up the stairs (no lifts) the receptionist rung the porter/jack of all trades with a "where are ya? can you come and help someone take their bags up" (think bogan talk). Very unprofessional.
* Room was adequate but bathroom you couldn't swing a cat in it was so small. Found our 3rd bed was a rusted rollaway that was taped together by worn out masking tape. The bed fell apart when one of the girls sat on it, it was appalling.
* After the bed incident, we proceeded to open the wine supplied to us with our accom package but there were no glasses left out for us. On searching the cupboards we found 2 glasses only that had been put in the cupboard unwashed from previous use that we had then wash out with shampoo to get them clean. We rang reception regarding the broken pathetic bed and the dirty glasses and was given a pretty substandard response. Finally they offered us a separate room for the first night stay only for the 3rd person as they did not have a spare replacement rollaway available for that night.
* We advised the receptionist at that time also that our aircon was blowing out cold air and not warm (it was freezing) and she told us that it was on and we needed to wait until the warm air kicked in. We went out for dinner expecting to come home to a warm room and when we walked in it was freezing still. The aircon did not work. One of the girls attended the front desk cause by this time with the things that had already gone wrong, we were pretty peeved. It was agreed that we would be moved to another room across the other side of the property where there was a working aircon. So here we were at nearly 11pm, packing up our stuff and dragging it up another flight of stairs to another room. Prior to this, my friend and the receptionist looked at 2 other rooms before actually finding the room with working aircon.
* So we finally had a new room that had working aircon but alas the tv didn’t work (apparently the batteries needed replacing in the remote) and the sink leaked everytime we washed our hands or brushed our teeth. We went out for the day and when we came back to the room our keycard for the door wouldn’t work and we were locked out….hahaha. by this time we were laughing and p’d off at the same time cause we could not believe the amount of things that were going wrong. When one of the girls went down to find out why the key wouldn’t work, she was like “oh, yeh that’s probably my fault I must of stuffed it when we put the rollaway in the room” (or something to that affect). Once again, very unprofessional for a 4.5 star establishment.
Overall the actual property grounds were beautiful and it was nice seeing the kangaroos and scenery in the quiet and serene atmosphere, but that’s about it. The rest of the stay was extremely disappointing and the whole place needs a complete overhaul. There was a sitting room with a fireplace in the main section that you couldn’t sit in when the fire was going as the smoke was so thick it was making us cough and we had to sit outside in the cold just to get away from it. Also the lounges in that room were ripped and worn and shabby. The pool was stained and tired and also could do with an overhaul.

Breakfast was okay with a good variety to choose from and eggs benedict made to order and good coffee. The lady that we dealt with on check out was exceptional and very helpful with our feedback on our stay. I’m not sure of her name, but she was very professional and helpful.

Room Tip: Make sure the aircon works and the rollaway is not taped together with masking tape.
