“An Oasis in the Middle of the Country”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2011

This was our first trip to the Hunter and I will definitely be back again. We stayed at The Mercure across the road which was really handy as we could have a few extra drinks without worrying about driving home. We went into Goldfish last night for some cocktails and dinner, what a surprise, this place looks like it could be in any city location in Australia, beautifully lit with candles everywhere and palm trees.
We sat at the bar and a lively Scottish bartender served us a couple of Rascal Mules, in pewter cups which were out of this world. He was so entertaining that we decide to eat at the bar, I ordered the whole barramundi which I must say was the best fish dish I have had in my life, the flavours were amazing, I know it's a big statement, but I just can't remember a time eating fish at a restaurant and saying, far out this is really good. My husband had the ribs which he devoured, one thing was cool is that they give you these little fresh towellettes like in Thailand to wipe your sticky fingers. I just can't believe there is a place like this so far away from the city. Can't wait to come back with a group of friends and make a big night of it.

“Goldfish, very average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2011

Despite the reviews below, we couldn't help but think that Goldfish could be a good option for a night out in Hunter Valley as there aren't many other options apart from Harrigan's for after dinner.

I was under the impression that there would be a restaurant area and then a bar, as when you book through the website you are asked which area you woudl like to sit in. Unfortunately not, this is one big bar, without separation. The food was pretty average, with edammame beans having been stir fried and oily, the tempura came without a dipping sauce and then chorizo was faine but fairly small. We also shared the baby back ribs, which were very nice and tender.

Despite looking very pretty, there wasn't much of an atmosphere in the bar, and as many others have mentioned, the service wasn't great - with one of our glasses of wine being completely forgotten.

it seems that this place just doesn't know what it wants to be - a restaurant, a bar or a club. It didn't really get going and at midnight we left to go to Harrigans - which it seemed had all of the people in it that Goldfish should have been attracting.
I wouldn't go again.

“Horrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2011

Went there on 12 June for lunch, the experience was simply horrible. The food terribly overpriced, the service was appalling and couldn't wait to get out if there!

“Simple....don't bother going!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2011

Whilst we would want to be positive here, the honest truth is that the experience was bad, really bad! The service was shocking, getting served was harder than finding Osama bin Laden! The cocktails are over priced for what they are what they taste like.
We had read the website and it was where we planned to be for our evening in the Hunter, but really, just should not have bothered. - which is a shame as it has potential. The venue is great, really well done - just so not met at the same level by the service, food or drink. Find another place to go.....

“Overpriced terrible service and finally stay away!!!!”

So overpriced. Dissapointed. Looks like a tempting place to enter but very deceiving. Not enough food and way overpriced. Service disgusting. Will never come again.
